    Question on 05.5 -06 S4 Purchase

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm in the market for a B7 S4 with around 50-60k miles on it. Found a number of them for private sale and wanted to know how these cars are up to 75-100k miles. At around 60k should I be asking them if they serviced any specific part of the vehicle? I'll end up having to fly and buy so wanna make sure I'm asking the right questions about these cars.

I'm a long time VW guy, over here from Vortex. I am selling an 08 R32 now and since previously had a 2006 Gli. I've never had any maintenance issues with either of the newer VW's but then again neither of them exceeded 35k miles. Just want to make sure the 05.5 -06 S4 is a solid car.

    Thanks.

I'd make sure you buy it CPO'd if you're planning on owning it until 100k.

So never buy one of these vehicles that is not a CPO?

i'm not very experienced, as i've only had my early 05 s4 for a few weeks, but on mine around 40k it was due for a serpentine belt, valve cover gaskets, drain plug seal on the thermostat housing, and control arm bushings..just a few things to keep in mind if you aren't doing the work yourself..and like i said i'm not very experienced with the s4's because i'm a long time vw guy as well..but there will be more chiming in i'm sure

Good point, I'm a long time VW'er as well. One particular car I'm interested in is for sale on these classifieds and I've spoke to the owner who has already replaced what you mentioned above. He's got a long history of maintenance records as well with the vehicle. The vehicle has around 61k on it and I think I could get it for a good price. The concern obviously is driving it for a few months then BAM, problems. Might have to go the CPO route just because that will be in the back of my head.

great, so it will be cpo'd for another 6-18 months, then out of warranty - not a good deal if buying the model year that he wants. 6yr/100K whichever comes first, on a 05.5 car means that it's only good til 2011 if your lucky. in other words, i disagree with above statement. are you really going to use thousands of dollars in warranty in the next year before it expires....CPO may be more worth it if you buy a newer model year. i bought 06 aniv edtn in 07, cpo'd, but nothing broken under warranty yet.

Don't be too scared off by the above posts. I'm at 75k on a 05.5 and all is strong but I do all the maintenance. Around 65-75 you do have some work to be done, but much is covered in DIY threads that can be done yourself if you want. Just stay away from the 04 (problems with some of the early build 04's) and get the 6MT ;-)

IMO the extended warranty isn't worth it hardly at all, especially if your planning on doing mods. The aftermarket warranty I was quoted was around $4k and I can buy/pay for a lot of work before I hit that price. These engines are strong they just need to be taken care of and good regular maintenance done.

I would find an 06 if you can versus the 05.0. the o6 will have the 60/40 rear differential, Symphony II+ radio, and some other stuff

I've had my car for two years put 20k on it and its been very good other than vavle cover gaskets and aux radiator. The only other things Ive done were just routine maintenance.

So is the 2005.5 the same as the 2006? You said 2005.0 so I'm assuming you're talking about the B6 body?

05.5 is aesthetically the same as an 06 but mechanically the same as an 05.
