Is there another Timing Belt DIY other than the AudiDIY one that's on an A6?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
That one is very detailed up until the timing belt part...?
It's more of a "how to disassemble the front end of an A6" than a timing belt DIY.
I searched my pooper off but can only find the A6 one.
Guess I gotta make one now.

Are you talking about the one by RMcQ that's in the audiworld tech articles? http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng63.shtml
That article is pretty accurate other than by his own admission not doing it properly by popping off the cam sprockets. What more info are you looking for?

^^ ya that one is pretty good, other then being an allroad vs S4. But I printed it out and used it to do my own belt. Worked like a charm.

I used the A6 DIY and filled in the timing belt part with the JHM video

Yeah that's the one, Alot of it is "remove this or that" with no pictures or detailed instruction of where the bolts are. Like the "round timing belt cover around the harmonoc balancer. I can't tell how the hell it comes off. Just wondering if someone made one with more detailed pictures/descriptions.

Okay seriously, I cannot find any bolts to remove the lower round timing belt cover. I figured I had to remove the crankshaft bolt to get behind the pulley and almost destroyed my timing because the crank sprocket was coming out with the pulley. Luckily everything went back together without messing the timing*hopefully*. WTF am I doing wrong here? these instructions make no sense to me and there are no pictures of the lower half of the engine during the install. I figured there'd be a tonne of these DIYs out there.

The order that some of the parts once you get to the pulleys and covers is important. Plus getting some of the stuff off requires you to remove the bolts in a certain order. It's not something that's very I intuitive. JHM vid is very thorough on those sections. Worth the 30 bux IMO

Are you using the proper tools? It's been a couple of years since I did this, but there are bolts behind the crank pulley that get removed once you have taken the pulley off. You can't(or shouldn't) do this without the bottom and top end locked in place if this is your first go round. Is this what you're having issues with?

I think that's where Im getting lost, the DIY doesnt mention anything about locking the crank. So I didnt use that crank locking pin (figured it was for 12v). I guess I need to remove the crank bolt and use the supplied locking bolt in order to slide the pulley off. Seems kind of important of a detail to omit.

You don't *have* to secure the bottom end, but I would first time around. It sounds like you removed the large 12 point sprocket instead of the smaller allen bolts on the pulley. You just need to take the pulley off and you can access the bolts for the lower cover.

I removed the 8 allen bolts but the pulley seems seized on, guess I have to use my vagina muscles? the 12 point sprocket bolt looks like it has a larger diameter than the hole in the middle of the pulley? guess not?

if you are talking about the crank pulley being stuck on after you remove the allen bolts, put some protection on it like some cloth to pad it and tap it a few times with the other end of a crescent wrench.. (don't damage it or it wont spin right) that thing can get stuck on pretty good... make sure your marks are good or you have the locking pin in place before doing so

Score! that will help alot thanks!

Where exactly is this crank locking pin supposed to go? I'm thinking it's on the block behind the filter near the driver side turbo?

Okay NVM I found everything I needed. I noticed that the crank marking doesnt line up with the mark on the timing cover. Should I line the mark up on re-install or what?
