What the purpose of having a breather on a catch can?

just wondering. going to make a cheap one and want to know if its better or doesnt matter if its there. i would imagine youd be able to smell it, right. if thats the case just vent it to atmosphere, with a filter. id rather not smell it so...

    pros. vs. cons.

    Go.

Well first search cause this has been covered many times. But, I would say you should vent back into your TIP from the output of the catch can. And, I would be interested to see how and what you would make one, so if you do, post it up.

Venting to atmosphere will leave you with a strong smell of oil all the time, mostly when your at a stop and the car is running.

The idea of the catch can routed back to the tip is to create a vacuum source to depressurize a crankcase, a good idea in turbo motors.

Just get a catch can if your gonna do it, unless it's a track car.

thanks for the info. no not a track car, spirited daily driver!

a catch can is very simple in design and can be made hundreds of ways, cheap to pricy. seach cause its been covered many times <**-poke!

i understand why not to vent to atmosphere, and why to keep it sealed. the question should have been worded more clearly.

theyre are "catch cans" with lines going in and out, with a drain,(like a conventional catch can) but also with a small filter on top. what is the purpose of that fiter/breather.

i have searched but did not come up with an answer.

this is just the first one i found to show you, not one im going to buy.

The 42 draft designs stealth catch can looks nice, I've been thinking of picking one up once my car is out of the shop

The small filter is to insure the pressure inside of the catch can is always the same as the ambient air pressure. However, provided the catch can is not a dead end in the vent line, there is no technical reason that this is required. Depending on how the catch can is installed, the filter will reduce the capture and retention of oily aerosols and water in the catch can. The best and most effective catch can setups are sealed ventilation, not connected to the outside air.

That's clean^ I need to figure out how to route mine. It looks like shit now that I put the stock air box back in. I don't really mind the smell at lights though lol, at least I know what it is.
