    APR Tuned at H2Oi

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The guys from the General Chit Chat were kind enough to let me crash their H2O weekend. It was a great time and the B8 S4's were well represented at many gtg's as well as a few meet ups with EA and N.E.R.D.

    Did Kev get a drop?

No! But he did get a Stratmosphere short shifter and StratJohn proved once again his commitment to his craft by installing at the show. He had the tools to get the job done on hand? Of course not, so we borrowed a T45 from the fine folks at APR and decided to test the weight limitations of the liftgate in a Penske box truck. I'll let Kevin tell you about the short shifter but got the impression that he liked it.

Keith from APR, not wanting to miss the chance to see StratJohn get crushed by a water/meth injected B8, came by to check it out and we got the ball rolling on the tune. I got to meet Arin and Joel for the first time as well. They took a lot of time to chat with Marty, Kev and I and you can tell they all really enjoy what they do. Even when you're doing it under tents in the pouring rain. Before you know it the car was done and it was time to go. it's a 3 hour ride back from Ocean City, MD to Philly. Perfect.

What can I say about the tune that hasn't already been said? The car is more responsive, has a greater sense of urgency and then you get over 5K rpms and it pulls hard right to redline. I wish the dsg would allow it to go to 7200 before shifting but nonetheless it continues to pull very hard after shifts. Left in dynamic mode and paired with exhaust and the whining of the sc, the car becomes the less civilized animal that so many of us wanted to begin with.

Great writeup, sounds like a blast, totally want a west coast meet, we'd have a dozen or more B8 S4's!

John, you are an animal, way to MacGuyver a way to do the install, LOL!

Brendon was at the show and the B5 guys were out looking for him. Wonder if they hooked up. We'll have to keep our fingers crossed and hope he came through on that one.

Just so spooledberries doesn't look silly. He is referencing an image I had included in the post at first but removed it. It was quite controversial but it wasn't my controversy to tell so I removed it.

Volt, you have experience with 2 tunes now. Is the apr much faster than the MTM? I kinda think it just costs much less, and is truthfull about gains vs. claiming 97hp gains.

Any gtech number yet? 0-60 or 1/4 mile. We saw visually a stock vs apr, but you have the best reference numbers from an mtm, and now an apr.

Voltron == owner of the car which got the 93 octane tune, he has a Meteor with DSG, the B8 S4 in back in the upper pics

Kevkev == guy whose has the black B8 S4 you see on the lift getting the Strat short shifter installed (the front of the 2 cars in the upper pics), and who has water/meth - yes he should get the 100 map.

Welcome back Keith, hope you guys had fun!

100 is not recommended if he is already running 93 pump? That's a lot of extra octane that I would think the engine could take advantage of - did he get a tune and can you talk about this?

it would be fulltime though, so meth would have to run continuous. Might work once the cruise control gets the on off maps.

Full tank of gas, crap load of stuff in the trunk, and all 6'4" 225 lbs of me in the car had it pull a 4.31 and a 4.25 as a red light racer on the way back from H2O but that's not a very controlled comparison. Let me get down to an 1/8th a tank of gas, get the crap out of the trunk, and go to the same place to see what happens. I understand much better now the impact of outside factors. Even slight inclines and declines in the road surface, even those which are hardly noticeable to the eye, have an effect on the gtech results.

If you look at the mtm dyno it still had a similar power curve as stock just a little higher. The APR tune runs strong to redline and that's where you can feel a big difference. In fact the mtm kit seemed like it wasn't doing anything sometimes. And quite frankly, just by taking it back after 9 months of use and not attempting to replace the hardware is an admission of knowing that the unit has inherent design problems that they couldn't fix for me. It's not a fair comparison. If someone told me that they could get an mtm cantronic for free I would tell them not to put it on their car.

Pull the two dyno charts up side by side and the difference feels just like it looks.

Like NW said. Kev has the w/m setup.

This was the big debate. Also the reason that I didn't explore getting a water/meth setup......yet.

What I took away from all of the water/meth 100 octane tune debate was that since the water/meth isn't spraying all of the time the 100 octane tune shouldn't be run because of the a sudden drop in octane from say 105 to 93 would potentially damage the engine. If you could regulate the injection to be on all the time and to be just the right mixture to keep the octane >=100 then it could be run. It would need to be a custom tune and would take a lot of testing, logging, and tweaking to get right. Anyone else have any input on this???

The night before I had the tune done Kev and I went at it a bit and just the water/meth itself is a noticeable difference. I couldn't keep up with him. His car pulls hard and with some of the nanny settings off can get obscenely sideways and recover like nothing happened.

Kevin did not get a tune. Our arrangement was that we would give him a free tune if he was able to bring his car to us to verify the 100 oct calibration would work with water/meth or we would make a water/meth calibration if possible.

Joel, our calibration expert for the S4, determined that it would be too dangerous for Kevin to get the 100 oct file at H20.

The concern is part throttle operation whereas the meth may not be injecting but the 100 oct calibration will still be asking for timing like 100 oct is in the tank.

Indeed, I am sincerely thankful to the forum and in particular, your efforts, Voltron, for keeping us informed about the real situation of the mtm piggyback. When I ordered my S5 Sportback, I had been following your thread super closely, as I was offered the mtm for free from the dealership. I declined and opted for upsized wheels instead. This was about the time when you were going through the remote programming with Germany. I'm glad I made the right decision.

my experience with part throttle on my particular turbo car and high octane file shows zero ill effects in regards to timing pull/knock voltage (thats with over 10* added to part throttle)...now obviously with a supercharged car it's different but with the MAF based controller that is not something that can't be handled.

Yep makes sense, thanks for the sanity check

Not yet. I have the 93 octane. Very soon I should be able to sen the ECU to them or stop by an authorized dealer to get the full, 4 program flash.

I was thinking the same thing. If you were to switch to 100 octane program for a few 1/4 mile runs or a track day and used the w/m then maybe that would be an option. The problem Joel had was for DD usage.

And let me tell you. Joel seems to be a "the faster the better" type of guy who wouldn't have passed on the opportunity if he didn't really feel there would be a problem.

Now that APR owns your ECU, a dealer should be able to do the upgrades via ODBII without a pull - Yay!

What would your suggestion be for this situation?
