car hesitates when I give it gas....help

Hey guys, everything was running smooth with the cars until last night. My girl was driving home last on her 99 audi a4 1.8t GTRS turbo and suddenly it started to stall.
changed spark plugs, cleaned MAF sensor and nothing. still hesitates when you give it gas.

when i press the gas a little bit it revs up and then it suffocates and tries to stall.
its idleing lower than normal.

I really dont know what to do now.

Sounds like a possible vacuum leak or MAF problem.

First I'd do a good visual check of all the intake hoses. If I didn't see anything obvious, next I'd look at the fuel trims and log the MAF.

It could be a fuel delivery issue as well. A bad fuel pump or fuel filter.

^^^^will check fuel filter.....if it were the pump the car wouldnt start at all. The car starts and idles, but when giving it gas its when it tries to stall

It is possible for it to be the pump. If the pump's internal pickup (in the tank) is getting clogged, or the pump is otherwise not flowing correctly, it can push enough fuel for it to idle, but nothing more.

well..changed the fuel filter and still nothing. Its idling at 500 rpm, when i press the gas a little bit it fluctuates between 500 and ~1500-2000rpms back and forth.

Next up...check the fuel pump!!!!

idling at 500rpm? check for vacuum leaks! assuming you have a gauge, what is it sitting at when idling? And just curious, what injectors are you running? You may want to look into them as a possibility..

Codes, fuel trims, MAF values? I wouldn't go changing the pump yet. Much more likely to be something else.

downloaded the vcds release 10.6 from ross-tech.

now i am trying to follow this instructions from this link

and am having issues installing the drivers for the ebay cable. I lost the cd-rom that came with it so i downloaded the one that is provided on that link.
what the hell do i do once i un-zip those files? there is no folder for installation or anything like that. I am no computer geek/nerd, so i am not sure what to do.
also when i go to set up the com port when i try to go ADVANCE, it says " you must have write priviliges in the registry for this device in order to modify the device's advance settings"...WTF!!!!

ebay cable only works with 409.1. VCDS version 10.6 will only work with an authentic ross-tech cable. So uninstall that and get the correct version.

Then get your cable virtual com-port installed using the FTDI drivers:
- unzip the files
- plug in your cable
- Should see the Found new hardware wizard
- Choose No, not this time
- Choose Install Software Automatically
- Check box for "include this location in the search" - browse for location of driver files where you unzipped them
- Finish
- Carry on with AZ walkthrough.
Then tell VCDS what com-port it is and you're golden.

Ok, got the driver to install...thanks.....now, i still get" i need driver pribiliges...blah blah blah...."
googled that and try to add the extensions it tells me to in regedit, but i get as far as :systems/currentcontrolset/enum/ACPI/pnp0501.....i right click two creat new binary value and it gives me an error saying i cannot creat one.

Is this XP or Vista, or what? 409.1 works best on XP, never tried it on anything else.

Make sure you are logged on with an Administrator account.

yes its XP, and logged on as admin. the problem is not vagcom. the problem is getting the com port settings.

Hmm, did you try uninstalling and re-installing the device? What FTDI driver version are you using?

Also, I am a little behind on the vcds shareware situation. Ross-tech has released an updated shareware version that works with the ebay cables. It is called VCDS-Lite version 1.0. I would suggest you try that, but you have to get your com port thingy sorted out first.

They also found radio fuse blown but am pretty sure that has nothing to do with it!

Did you get this issue settled? Had the same problem on my 01.5 and it was the engine speed sensor that went bad.

nope, not yet......So engine speed sensor fixed your problem? before you replaced it, was the car still drivable? couse i cant drive mine for a couple of feet. It will die right away.

Well, Chris known as "thepirate" here. Came by for a few minutes to scan the codes with his scanner and came up with

P1545 Throttle Valve control system malfunction.

does this mean i need a new throttle body? or just the throttle position sensor?

My car had the same exact issue when i bought it. Which is why I got it so cheap.. hehe.
Basically the throttle body needs to be reprogrammed to cooperate with the fuel injectors and MAF. The main reason this would lose it's memory is if the MAF got unplugged, ECU got unplugged, or the battery was disconnected for longer than 30 mins. I found a VW/Audi specialist who reprogrammed my car for free in less than 2 mins. Just hooked a computer up to it and hit calibrate. Theres also a cheater way to do it. It involves opening the hood and leaving the ignition in the on position for some time before you hear the butterfly turn. Unfortunately my car's hood sensor was MIA when I bought the car. I would research more about that hood trick if you dont know a cool local mech with a VAG-COM setup. All it really is is a laptop with a firewire that hooks to your car

the weird thing is that this happened while she was driving the car.

update!!!!

took off the throttle body and cleaned it with brake cleaner, removed some dirt/build up that was on the butterfly and she now idles perfect!!!! engine doesnt vibrate hard at all!!!!!! woot woot!!!!!!!!!!

Now the car still is not drivable....apperantly i stll have to program the TB, how do i do that if my vagcom is not working? I know it can be done manually but i dont know how...any write ups?

well...i finally got my old laptop to start and use vagcom to do a throttle boddy alignment. I scanned my S4 and had no problems....then went to go scan the A4 and it doesnt communicate with the controller. what the hell....Chris (thepirate) came with his little code scanner and worked perfect! what could it be?

hello, i found your post by accident, but omg, it seems we have the same problem even though cars differ. Car also hesitated but i fex that with new coil lines for the spark plugs. BUT i have that rough idle, very weird vibrations. I checked everythingrelated tot vibrations and its not it, bushes, engine works great but THOSE vibrations omg and i bet its the same. I cant even remember when they started.
Should i take the throttle body out and clean it (now its cleaned but i didnt take it out, kept it there, it had black dirt on the clap thing that opens/closes. That fixed idle variations 500-900rpm, stop light example.

Or anyway to reprogram it? Does flynnr method work?

A4 B5 Facelift 1.6i 74kw AHL engine . Everything works perfect except a small problem with the AC that i`m about to fix. Jesus i`m so happy i found this post.

FIXED :) .
Took the throttle body out, all air intake stuff also. Cleaned injectors softly with deer skin.
Cleaned all air intake and sensors. I found a hair rapped around the bottom of the butterfly, it gathered alot of dirt around it.
cleaned the module that gives sparks to the coils also. Changed thermostat, water temp sensors + new cooling fluids.

Car idles great now.
Need to replace gearbox oil and servo oil, they stink.

To adapt the throttle body I believe you go to block 62 and switch to basic settings (the directions are on vagcom website).

i had to cut the plastic around the vag switch on the car, those tards that made it measured bad, vag didnt fit.
I guess these cars are prone to bad idle`ing...

Update!!!! ( yeah after so 4 months)

Finally figured what my problem was......the focking ECU took a shit!!!!!!!!!

yeah...i repalced it with another ecu and it worked perfect!!!!!!!!!

I guess i have to send the ECU to GIAC to get it checked and see what can be done to it. its on the pc-16 file.
