So, this build has been off and on for the past 7 years. Now that I am out of school, working full time, and have my own house/garage, it's time to start working on this thing again (albeit, still at a snail's pace). Some of these parts I've had for the past 7 years sitting around collecting dust, but no more! It is time to get this thing running again. The goal is to at least crank it up (most likely without intercooler plumbing) to get some play time with the Vi-PEC unit as well as just to make sure timing is correct and to just hear it roar again. Also, nothing in here is set in stone, so expect changes, even with how close she is to being done.

First, the car: a 2001 Audi A4 1.8tQM. Nothing too special; Hibiscous Red (one of my favorite colors

For the head, during the process of porting and polishing, we discovered that more machining would be required in order for the cams to freely rotate in the head (since the cam lobes are MUCH larger than stock).

I had a forged 1.8t crank sent off to Jared at SCCH for knife-edging and balancing.

I went with Mahle Motorsport bearings because they come highly recommended for performance applications and they come in the correct 5 grooved, 5 smooth format (versus ACL bearings, which are 6 grooved, 4 smooth; could cause problems with oil pressure, especially in high horsepower applications).

Some random pictures of the motor being assembled.
Here, we had to notch and bend the oil squirters in order to allow for free rotation of the rotating assembly with the FSR pistons.

Some friction shims; one for the crank nose and another for the flywheel.

Currently, we are in the process of timing the camshafts.

You can't really see it because of the Fluidampr but behind it is the IE billet crank gear. A word of warning: these crank gears do NOT come with the indent to install a harmonic balancer correctly (correctly meaning being able to use the marking on the harmonic balancer to line up with the marking on the timing belt cover to find TDC). You will have to manually find TDC by using a degree wheel, or hope like hell your crankshaft did not move 1 degree when removing the old crank gear or installing the new one.
Also, we haven't fully torqued down the gear or balancer yet, which is why there are only 2 bolts holding it on right now.
