Quick ecu question/trying to pass smog

I'm on my phone so I can't search (efficienty), as I know this has been asked and the answer is out there.

I have a 2001 6 speed and my current set up failed smog. I am currently putting my car back to stock fueling and need to find out which ecu is compatible with my h box. I only have my hands on an m box and t box. Will either of those work JUST to pass smog? If not which ones will.

m-box, but you as far as I knew you had to recode the cluster with vag-com. Do stage 3's typically pass smog in CA? I have to smog mine in a couple weeks. Do you think it's worth trying if I have cats?

your sig says 'no cats' ** do you mean piggie pipes (only pre cats gutted - still has back cats) or do you literally have no cats? Also are you a 01.5 or pre? If u want to come up to Fullerton and you're 01.5 you can borrow my M-Box (your regional post was asking for H-box..so maybe you are pre 01.5) but thought I'd check to make sure.

if u have cats you should pass even stage 3. Did you go for a loooong highway cruise and really 'blow her out' (Italian tune up) before pulling into the smog station?
