    DIY - Tweeter Install

Here is a quick write up on how to add the B&O tweeters to your standard sound system.

There really isn't a lot to this one but according to Jim (b8_jim) the collaborator on this one, it does improve the systems sound and fills in the gap from the factory system.

I suppose if the diameter is the same but unless your upgrading your amp as well it may not give you a lot more sound.

Great little add-on to do when installing folding mirrors... If nothing else, at least run the wires so you don't have to take the door apart at a later time.

    David,
On Page 2 of the article, please confirm the wire part number. You have 000 989 009 E listed. Should it be 000 979 009 E?

    Thanks!

Good catch, sorry I just copied and pasted some stuff from an email without double checking. I'll try and change ASAP.

I'd have to look it up. I used my car for a lot of the pics but the fact is I have the B&O system in my car. It was B8_Jim that actually did this on his car.

    ohh gotcha, still, cool nonetheless!
what website do you prefer to look up / purchase codes? i know they're out there but im not sure which one gives the best rates & shipping to canada. it seems most of them like to charge Ticketmaster-fees to ship anywhere but the continental US.

    $84.48 for 2 - 8T0 035 399B – B&O Tweeter for front door “pillar”
    $12.30 for 2 - 4B0 971 832 – Flat contact housing for tweeter (i.e. “Plug”)
$18.44 for 2 - 000 979 012 EA – Wires for Plug (looks like the original ones I listed are superseded.

So the total was $115 from ECS tuning. Now here is the kicker. Each of the B&O grills are worth $115 each. So you have to decide if they are worth the time it would take to drill out the little holes :)

I use Genuine when I can but if they have to order something it's a no go. Failing that I go to Neil at Owasco in Oshawa since he charges actual shipping and he gives us shop rate on the parts.

Those are very different looking than the original 979009's. The 012's look like they are the tab connector (in ETKA) whereas the 009's look like a receptacle connector.

Boy am I getting tired of this.... Yeah it looks like the original was right even if it is superseded. Stupid ETKA brought up the mating connector. I wouldn't have even looked if it wasn't for ECS showing me about 15 different wires when I put that one in.

I just need to stick to the basics and tell people to call their dealer for part numbers.

These are also found in VW's. A couple calls to local dealers and the best I could do was $6.60 for each housing and $2.90 for each wire. That was after a few other VW and Audi dealers were wanting 2x or 3x as much for each item...

    Sounds good.
Im very interested in this install for aftermarket tweeters.
But Im thinking that since its unamped and still sitting amonsts the audi standards it might not completely worth it going that route.

    Hello, I have 2 questions:
    1. I have an A5 with 8 speakers and no amp or sub (thats the base model here in Greece). Can I still retrofit the tweeters even though I have no amp at all? I suppose they draw little energy so there will be no problem.
    2. For that money there might be better performing tweeters than the B&O. Do we have their dimensions (size, depth, position of screws) so we can find more brands?

    Thanx!!

You have a valid point there... There is nothing that forces us to use the B&O speakers... (except for OEM installation..)
If I were to do this, I would definitely want the B&O grills to add the cool silver ring... but seriously! $115 a piece?

Aside from the price, my thought would be to only use the B&O Grills if ALL of the speakers are switched out to B&O. It's almost (not entirely) like slapping an S4 badge on an A4 that had a bunch of mods to make it similar to an S4.... not that this is uncommon...

I spent about $120 for the parts/etc, but about $15 of that was for capacitors and shipping that are apparently not needed due to David's find of the cap under the label on the B&O tweeter. I ordered from genuine, in 2 sets - so about $20 Shipping - since I did just one side to make sure things were going to work first. I also ordered a "spare" set of grills (standard) in case I messed up the originals in some way - about $12.

So I think you could do this for about $95 if ordered all at once and you don't put in any kind of "crossover" components and rely on the cap in the tweeter.

TexasEric : running the wires won't help that much as you have to remove the door panels to get the grills off. I guess you could cut the slot/tab at the bottom to allow it to slip off and up if you really wanted to and rely on the small clips to hold it in place.

Overall I think this was money well spent - I had fun doing the mod and the system sounds better. The B&O tweeters were attractive because they just snap in, but others could be used.

BIG thanks to David for all the help and info that allowed me to do this.

I ran the wire last weekend when I installed my folding mirrors. Here are my post-wiring tips and comments:

    • I found out why the grills will not come out with the door assembled. On the door trim is a black peg, almost like a 1" black juice box straw sticking straight out. The tweeter grill has a loop on the bottom of it that slides over that peg. Pulling will not work, unless you make a minor adjustment to the grill... Cutting a small piece out of the loop will make it easily removable without taking the door apart and without impacting the way it attaches to the pillar. See my picture, below, and look at the loop on the bottom. I actually took my grills into the local big-box hardware store and asked the guy if I could borrow his tin snips for a minute. He laughed and helped me. It took 30 seconds and cut like butter. I did this because I had the door apart and did not have the grill drilled out or the tweeter on hand. I expect to finish this up very soon. I will now be able to do it without tearing apart my door again.
    • If you use the Audi wires mentioned above and cut them in half to make two wires out of one, you will only need to extend them another 4 inches to reach the door speaker. The article picture makes it look like it is a lot longer, but its not.
    • I did use the Radio Shack wire taps (http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2104093). They worked perfectly.

    Good Luck...

Can someone confirm the part numbers for the non-B&O grilles that come with the holes for the tweeter, please... if they exist. I just received my 8K0035423-4PK and 8k0035424-4PK covers and they definitely are not correct.

It is only the B&O that has the holes.

On page 2 in David's DIY you can read how to drill the holes on standard trim.

That is what I figured. This needs to be made more clear in the article.

There is a much simpler (and likely safer) method. As it turns out, the plastic is pretty soft. I found that by using a simple push-pin, I am able to do the job very well. The trick with the push-pin is to first poke from the outward facing side to the inside, THEN turn it around and poke each hole pack through. This will make the holes a little more even. I think it may be a lot easier than pulling out a drill and risking big mistakes.

Does anyone have more information on the factory amplifier for non-B&O? I haven't been able to find it anywhere and I've been searching for a couple days.

Here is what I want to do...

I'm looking to replace my front stage speakers while keeping the factory amp(for now). My left tweeter is blown so I figured this would be a good time to get a pair of tweeters and 6-7" woofers to swap out the factory ones. I would also like to swap out the center driver. I've been looking at Dayton speakers for a while and want to upgrade with the reference line they have. When I upgrade the tweeters I want to place them in the A-pillar's B&O style. This would allow me to upgrade mid range speakers on the dash in the future.

My main question here is would I have an upgrade in SQ and output from this upgrade while keeping the factory amp? (Till I am able to get the ms-8 and a 4 channel amp)

I went to replace my front tweeter thinking it was out, turns out I bought the car without it. Can someone show me what the front door tweeter wires look like and where they run too please?
