    How to increase boost?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have wondered for some time why us Audi guys have so much trouble making tons of power out of our 1.8t. I've looked at a lot of dyno's from several evo's and they tend to make about the same power as we do (+/-30whp) when matched up with the same turbo. The difference is the evo crowd is really turning up the boost. Most of the audi's I see are running between 21 and 23psi max. Many in the evo crowd like the Garrett GT35r to make the big power. This turbo will also make a ton of boost. Several on the evo scene are cranking them up to 30 35 even 40psi with upgrades internals. They are making 700whp and still streetable, they just turn the boost down to 12-16psi. If I were were to build up the internals on the 1.8t to withstand high boost, how do we adjust it? I always heard you can't use a EBC/MBC. Can you use something like Apr's ECU explorer to change the boost and timing. If I wanted to crank the boost to 36psi, how would you do it?

the make a lot of power with the gt35r but also have larger displacement engines.

I belevie one of the problems is our ecu's are too smart. The injectors will cut off gas feed, or something like that, and cause the engine to blow. too high air to fuel ratio.

MOrgie has a large turbo, not sure what kind of power he is putting down.

also, i bet thier 700hp cars only have that in the very high rpms.

700whp is pretty much just a dream for 1.8T. The best I heard was 450chp. At 36psi, you neeeeed very strong everything.

i know you mentioned an upgraded turbo, but if you plan on cranking the k03 to 36psi plan on it exploding. a k03 cannot handle that, its a tiny turbo.

If I remember right the evo was hitting the 700 mark at a little over 7000 rpm's. They really aren't a high rev engine like a honda. Displacement is only 2.0liters, with the gt35r the lag is pretty bad coming on around 1200 rpms later then stock. We can stroke ours to 2.0liters.
The highest horsepower I remember a 1.8t hitting was 490whp at the 1.8t challege by Wide Open Motorsports. Atp is hitting 420whp with stock internals with a Garrett gt30xx in a b5 A4 quattro. They just ran a 11.9x through the 1/4 with no nos.

36psi on the ko3 with a squirt of nos Might as well let it scream for mercy. I plan to install apr's stage 3+ along with some upgraded cams and a port and polish on the head. If the funds come together I would like to put in some dahlback racing connecting rods and pistons. They are rated for 900whp and 9000+rpms. That should do the trick. I figure I have at least two to five years to save my pennies til apr releases the 3+ setup. Til then I will just abuse my ko3.

Sorry I still don't know how to link. You can go to atpturbo.com and look for project 1.8t. Just checked they put down 426whp and 430lbs tq. 1/4 was 11.97 The car is really pretty stock. No cams or headwork at all. It has a upgraded clutch, 3" exhaust, fmic, bigger injectors, and custom tuning software for the big turbo. Be sure to click on "more info" they chart the progress with all the upgrades along the way. Its pretty interesting.

your never gonna get a k03 to boost 36lbs or a k04, plus even on a k04 its all hot air after 25lbs anyway

Hey guys just kidding on the ko3 hitting 36psi. FINA4, that for the tip on linking. I'll have to give it a try.
Nadroj81, ATP does do their own tuning, but from what I understand its really not one of their strong suits. You can do much better with Upsolute or Revo BT.

Hopefully revo willl finalize a BT program.
Should be interesting if they can tune something larger than the gt28, considering other companies are having trouble...

Firstly i would advise against trying to run 36 psi on stock ko3 and internals. if you have a gt35r 36 psi is achievable with fuel mapping and ignition timing tuning. I recently found something on ecstuning.com for increasing boost on stock ko3 and im considering buying. I have to do a little more research before i buy it and i was wondering if anybody had any experience with this product. It is a Forge KO3 Adjustable Wastegate Actuator. link: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-forge-pa...FUVYDQodbA0AXA let me know what you think of the product. Thanks

36 psi isn't necessary to make a lot of power, high 20's will get you in the 400+ range just fine.

Your first mistake is comparing a 170 hp luxury car to a 300 hp rally car for the road...
I've owned a BT b7 a4 (granted, they're restricted by rs4 injectors) and a BT 450 awhp Evo X (stock motor) and I can tell you right now, the difference in motors are HUGE. Making good power in the Evo is 20x easier than the Audi.
Audi didn't build this motor with high performance in mind, whereas mitsubishi made that it's number 1 priority.

Also, the 4g63 has been around for over 30 years. 24 of those in Evo's. That's a lot of time for a motor to become "tried and true"
Lots more time, effort, research, and money have gone into those motors than Audi's 1.8T's.

Changing the wastegate without adjusting the tune to compensate for the adjusted wastegate pressure will result in overboost conditions and limp mode.

Rather than changing the wastegate, why not get a tune? Youll get more than double the stock boost pressure and safely make an extra 30-50HP.
