and the de-modding begins! well thats what i think i should do.

chp officer pulled me over for no front plate.. my tags are expired but im just waiting for my sticker to come.. so i got a fixable ticket for that. he then started asking questions about exhaust, injectors, blow of valves, turbo upgrades, ect he was going to just give me a ticket for the intake/registration but then he asked if my cats are in place still.. i tried to bluff him and say yes they are but he actually looked under my car and knew i had a straight pipe after the turbo. i got the special cvc codes saying i cannot drive my car without passing state ref or my car will be impounded for 30 days and maybe go to jail for a misdemeanor for smog.

so.. this is state ref #2.. this couldn't of come at a worse time since i just spent over 4k on my BT setup..

what i need to do:
1. locate stock airbox for b6
2. high flow cat / or put my stock cat back in
3. front plate on
4. get my car tested to see if i can pass smog with my bigger turbo/inj/ecu upgrade
5. if that fails, im parting out.

Oooh man, I feel for you. I had to go through the same thing myself about six months ago. I left the turbo, injectors and tuned ECU in the car. Everything else I put back to stock. The referee is very very picky so make sure you put all covers to mask as much as possible the bigger turbo. I would put the stock cat. If it's a high flow cat he WILL ask you for the CARB number.
It is a painful and frustrating experience to go through, it really makes you hate cops for a while after that. Not having a cat is pretty bad though and even I had a high flow cat at the time because I do care about the environment some and I also hate driving behind people with no cats due to the smell. Either way, it's not the end of the world, do not give up, this is just a setback. It took me half a day to put my car back to stock.

That sucks bro. So much easier to hide turbos, etc on the S4. I recommend getting a physical mailbox in Nevada at a postal store and register your ride there. :)

Wow Ravi that really blows!! I had to do the Ref thing for my exhaust a few years back, but luckily I had the stock cat in at the time and passed no problem.

I can help get you out of this.l Unfortunately the officer can write what he wants but the court will have to prove your vehicle is Unsafe according to CVC Sec. 24002 to keep you from driving it. Remember people, police don't hold ANY power. Only the power to enforce it to the best of their knowledge. And let me tell you, 85% of the time they don't know the semantics and you can get out of something like this in court. This is according to my wife the legal nutjob :) To keep you off the road he would have had to hit you with CVC 27156(f). :)

I had one of those. I drove anyays. Got pulled over again and showed the cop my ref ticket and told him I was waitingfor parts. Anyways I just paid the bail and never went to the ref. There was no way I was gonna pass and didn't want to deal with it.

i've passed state ref 2 years ago by putting my stock cat and airbox back in.. i had the revo 1+ with 380cc inj, stock turbo at the time... so hopefully i can put that stuff on and take it to a test only to see if i can pass the sniffer and just work on making my engine bay totally stealth. this was one reason why i went with a 71R eliminator instead of a full frame.

the state refs are such dicks too. they wouldn't pass me with my FORGE 007, or FMIC. i had to go completely back to stock. i hope you can get thru easiier than i did tho. or just pay the bail amount and forget it. but it'll probably be like 800 bucks i'm guessin.

Thats another infraction within itself. If he has a CA drivers license and the car is registered out of state in his name, they will MAKE him register it in CA. Dont make it worse for him.

that really sucks, ca sucks for their smog laws. Only reason i went high flows instead of no cats is i didnt want to get tagged without them, ive heard they can even tow your car on the spot. Even high flows are illegal in california on 96+ models, its suppose to be an OEM replacement only(with complete documentation). Supposed to be a 2500 federal fine for tampering with emmissions, ive heard in reality its 1500-2000. Good luck. Not true at ALL. They have to prove where the garage is primarily garaged. Easy, get an address in Nevada, file for an LLC which is like $99 for basic one. Register car to the company. You will NEVER get hassled.

Should have gone to court. CHP and State Ref are not the lawmakers and usually very poor interpretors of the law. You have to stand up for your rights.

I'm managing to get this all cleared up. I put on my front plate and took off my front window tint. That should give them no real reason to hassle me anymore. Its worth since I don't drive a "stock" looking car. I might put 50% later in time but my interior is black so I really dont mind right now. I have my stock airbox in and my car is 100% emissions legal so I have no issues passing my state ref which I have scheduled on Wednesday. I'll get to court and clear it all up and get my car back in business, fast and stealth.

I was pulled over on Mission Blvd. in Hayward by the motorcycle shop. Even if I get my hood popped again I'm totally ready for it since there is no carbon fiber intake and it looks completely stock. I just have to decide if I want to take the risk of running a TP or HFC thats not carb legal.

i'm sure you've read my post from when i got pulled over in Fremont right?? i printed out some docutments showin that an intercooler is NOT illegal on cars witha factory turbo.. blah blah blah... and i gave that to the judge and told him the officer didnt' know what he was talking about. along with my smog PASSED sheet, and i got it knocked down to a fix-it ticket. $25 bucks. so i mean i got pretty lucky.. hopefully you will too.

also, consider having TP witha factory heatshield wrapped around it. i may or may not have had this done :x lol.

I actually got pulled over on 680 N about a month ago, and the CHP asked to pop my hood. I actually was thinking about your first state ref ticket where you stated u got the ticket due to the carbon fiber intake. The CHP glanced over and missed my testpipe and I was soooo happy

Dude i live in Cali also. All you have to do is pay the fine and you will be fine. My friend just payed it and never reffed the car. You only have to reff it to show them they were wrong and for u not to pay the fine.

Any modern engine will make too much HP and still pass smog. Why the cats were put on was to not pollute so if you get caught
tough darts ace. The law should be for all cars to have smog gear. Any year any model any car.

With that reasoning, I could freely drive an alcohol fueled dragster down Main Street with no mufflers...as long as you have a NV plate, right? Not going to happen. All out of state cars are required to adhere to CA laws. Ask anyone from AZ who drove their car to CA and got a window tint ticket. But, even if that wasn't the case, registration fraud is more serious than aftermarket car parts in the eyes of CA law. All it takes is a pissed off neighbor and an anonymous tip and you're screwed. Can you get away with it? Of course! I'm sure there are lots of people doing just that. But, is it certain that you will NEVER get hassled? No. Handing a cop a CA license with a NV registration card in a highly modified car is the biggest giveaway of all. And, there are no "rights" when it comes to driving and motor vehicles, the state doesn't have to prove anything. It is up to YOU to prove your residency. The state ref is a perfect example of that. You are already assumed to be guilty, the ref is there for you to prove your innocence.

i passed with my FMIC, ,2871R elim, atp manifold, bigger injectors, revo tune, forge007(polished btw), neuspeed TIP, neuspeed exhaust(removed resonators).. my car is 99.9% legally legit.. i have my stock airbox back in.. and my cat.. thats all i needed to change to pass. i HIGHLY RECOMMEND to got Las Positas College State Ref. they thought my boost gauge (podi) was a fucking tach LOL.


for you other people who drive modified/tuned cars..

keep the engine bay looking stock and keep your engine covers on and keep a front plate + no front tint if you do not want to go through this hassle. i feel like i can drive past a cop and smile and say ha ha suckas... you cant pull me over!...unless its for my exhaust :O

i'm just waiting for my fines to come so i can goto court and hope they get reduced when i show them proof my car passed emissions.

do you think you could smogged/ref a turbo'd engine without a turbo and have it passed? Assuming it passed the sniffer do you think they would even realize/care it lacking major parts? I feel like they are always just looking for things that are "out of place" not in place. lol
