    DIY: 1.8T Coilpack Replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Here is a DIY for removing and installing a Coilpack on the 1.8T motor.

First things first. Find yourself a flat head screw driver. The one in the tool box in the trunk works perfect.
If you choose to be a man and go tool less you can.

    First setp.
Pop your hood and you will find a motor

The coilpacks are under this plastic cover. So lets pop it off!

Bam! get in there with that screw driver and pop off the 3 fast clip screws. You can also use your key to pop these off the manly toolless install.
It will then just pull straight up.

Set it to the side and you will find your coilpacks.

There are 4, one for each cylinder. Pick the one you want to remove. I chose cyl 3.

Here you find the clip. it slides off the coilpacks male end. Stick the screw driver in the slot, you can remove the clip 1 of 3 ways. But be careful, they can be ***ile.

    Way #1

Push the clip part to the outside and it will release the wireing harness.

    Way #2

Turn the screw driver sideways so it pushes the clip part to the outside, allowing it to disenage the coilpack.

    Way #3, mainly toolless way

Use your thumb and push down/away from the coilpack on the clip and it will disengage.

    Now we remove the harness,

    Bam! Thats done.

Now we remove the coilpack. To do this we pull up on the coilpack gently. At first it will not want to move. You will have the break the seal that it has made with the valve cover. Dont worry, they pop up.

    Pull up like this

Careful not to catch your fingernails on anything, it can hurt. Oh and the motor can be hot too.

    Keep on tugging

Careful to pull straight out so you dont bend/break the coilpack.

Good work! Now you have an empty spot for a fresh coilpack. Its all downhill from here.

Get your new coilpack (this is my old spare coil from the trunk so its not really new like yours will be)

Pull it out of the box and get ready to put it in.

Line it up straight. Careful not to bend it because it will break. Push straight down, not at an angle.

Push it down firm, make sure its as in as it will get. Put your hand on the flat part and make sure its not going to pop back up.

    Connect the harness

Oh yeah it looks good huh

Throw back on the engine cover and tighten the fast clip screws.

    Now your all set!

Great success. Go enjoy your new coilpacks

nice writeup, but i'm still questioning the necessity of this. there seriously can't be people out there who can't change a coilpack...

Yeah im with you on that one. But there wasnt one, I have yet to write a DIY so I figured something easy for the first time. Plus for the people who dont know, I guess everyone has to start somewhere, and having a DIY isnt really hurting anyone.

Seriously a great/detailed write up. Here is the one I use which serves two purposes; one, change CPs, and two replace spark plugs. :

^ That is a great DIY. I focused more on the clip part on mine. Mainly because, although His is great, it doesnt show how to undo the clips. Its not rocket science by any means, but I did manage to break one the first time I tried. So if this keeps at least one person from breaking a clip it was more then worth it

The easiest way to remove those spring loaded clip harnesses which are found everywhere in the car WITHOUT TOOLS is as follows:

    1) push the harness inwards to release the tension
    2) press down on the tab to lift up the clip
    3) while pressing down on the tab pull the harness backwards

If the engine is hot you can use a rag on top of the coilpack to shield your hands from the heat.
