Intro w/planned stage III & cam follower pic

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello all,

I thought I'd finally introduce myself here. I just picked up this Avant (6MT, fully loaded), and enjoying it. I've already installed the Dension iPod interface, RS4 pedals, smoke reflectors, debadged, vag-com'd, repainted the wheels, and I'm getting the windows tinted this week. I've also done some preventative maintenance (oil/air/cabin filter, plugs, pcv, piston DV, fuel filter, cam follower). Speaking of the cam follower, this is one of the worst I've seen on the forum.

I'm planning a BT build, as I just placed my order with APR for the Stage III kit, along with exhaust and intake. I should have this done within 3 weeks. Still debating on the FMIC, I'm open to suggestions. Looks like APRs will be the best, but not sure when it's available. I'm also looking at ATP and AWE for that.

I'm located near Reno, but make frequent trips to Cali since the girlfriend lives there. (I'll be hitting up ALMS at Laguna Seca in a few weeks)

Just wanted to make a formal intro and say thanks to all those with great DIY's, it's made my life easier with the car. And now on to the pics!

DO NOT GET THE ATP INTERCOOLER.
i have a stage 3 BT and the ATP intercooler, im experiencing excessive heat.
and my tuner told me long story short, it's just not doing it's job correctly.
if I had a better intercool I would be doing around 310whp.. im doing like 280whp right now. pretty big difference

in other words, worst intercooler you can possibly buy is the ATP. (Unless of course you're going stage II or lower)
Stage 3 BT deserves AWE, or APR intercoolers.

Go with a Evolution Racewerks intercooler anodized black to give your car the sleeper look. It is also the largest bolt on intercooler (cubic inch wise) that is offered for our cars.

I agree with the anodized black sleeper look, but does the Evolution Raceworks FMIC force you to mod your fogs?

Not to threadjack, but could you just buy an AWE FMIC and have it powder coated black, or would this clog or

    affect the FMIC performance?

No trimming of the fogs is necessary and yes you still retain them. The only thing that has to be slightly trimmed is the bumper support.

If you were to powder coat it, it would clog.

Nice ride! When are you doing the suspension? Brakes? Also - I've got the ER side mount intercoolers and they are doing a great job with my stage III set up - no mods whatsoever to put those in - just a thought.

Go with the AWE FMIC, definitely. It has done a fantastic job on many track days and handles the heat of my Stage III fine. You will need brakes though, you'll find yourself shaving speed way too often with all that power.

No, I didn't have any issues, so I wasn't expecting that cam follower to look like that. Crazy stuff.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I now have some better ideas. I was leaning towards the AWE side, but I'll have to look into the side mount and the Evolution. I just called APR, they said they are planning a June release on the FMIC.

I'm also planning brakes and suspension, but I'll have to let the checkbook recover first!

Looks very nice (and pretty rare). And yeah, lol, that cam follower is toasted. If you ever need another one, we have them in stock (http://www.europaparts.com/fuel-pump...6d109309c.html).

Also, look up EuroA4's thread that shows his AWE FMIC in black...I forget where he had it done, but it came out very nice and stealthy.

F the cam follower......how's you cam and HPFP piston?? Thats more of a concern to me when look the pics then what brakes and suspension he's going to run. Those things are sweet to but that cam is foul. Not trying to scare but I know how my cam follower looked and in turn what my cam and HPFP pistion looked liked as a result.

I couldn't get a good look at the cam lobe, the piston looked fine as far as I could tell. However, since I replaced the follower there is now a chugging noise from the that area (not very loud, but noticeable). I'm going to pull the valve cover and get a look. I'll probably now be replacing the camshafts as well as timing belt since I'll have it torn apart. I can't start the stage 3 until I get this taken care of. Sucks big time.
