    Speedo not working right

    Hello,

I saw that there are a few threads about this already, mostly by the same guy, but this morning my speedo started to act real weird. The spedo will jump around when i am holding at a steady speed, and sometimes it will not show anything at all. When i press hard down on the gas my fuel gauge goes to full, and my miles till empty increase. Also i just started getting an oil sensor indicator appearing not all the time, but occasionally on the cluster. When i run the system check from the cluster it comes back saying everything is ok, but obviously it is not. I removed the cluster fuse in the fuse panel inside my driver side door and re inserted it just so it would reset, but this did not help. I will be attaching a video that i shot with my phone of the speedometer jumping around later this evening. i have a 2002 audi a4 1.8t CVT, so hopefully this is not something that is a major deal, and hopefully an easy fix, as i do not know much about repairing cars. If anyone can also give me a rough idea if you have one on how much this would cost to repair if you have an idea of what my problem is let me know. Thank you...

    Garrett

Your electrical system is going ape, could be the speed sensor.

If you have a vag com you can do a gauge sweep to check the gauge. Go into module 17 and work your way through the output diagnostics until you find it. The gauges will sweep all the way to the right then back to the left. If the speedometer jumps or malfunctions when doing the sweep the cluster is bad. If it doesn't its a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) problem. Another possibility is a broken VSS magnetic sensor ring: Clicky click

Similar problem, but thought B6 doesn't have VSS and magnetic ring:

My speedo just stopped working this morning. It didn't work at all for a while and then it started working somewhat. Sort of has the right speed, but moves around slowly. Last week I caught a curb with my front passenger tire (this is the only thing besides regular use I could think would have changed something).

I came across theVSS and magnetic ring fix on B5s, but when I called the dealership and gave my VIN was provided parts number # 8e0927803a, which is a front ABS sensor. I was also told the magnetic ring was not the same, but required a full hub and bearing replacement (2). Early in research I was assuming it was the magnetic ring problem, but being told B6s have a different setup has stumped me. Any ideas?

I don't have an ABS or other error or problem lights on.

A place between here and there

They want your money. Most likely your VSS or corrosion on the contacts (issue when I had it was simply corrosion, cleaned contacts and have been fine ever since). Try cleaning your contacts first if they look corroded. Start with the free fixes, then progress into the cheaper to more expensive ones. Diagnose correctly along the way, if possible (to save cost).

The early models used the the VSS sensor. Either late '02 or early '03 the VSS was no longer used and the left front ABS sensor was used for generating the necessary signal.

Old guy - should I trust the parts department of my local Audi dealership on identifying parts needed off my VIN (not that I'm actually gonna buy from them if it's a lot more)? Assume with my VIN they would be right, but sure seems more like a VSS and/or magnetized wheel/gear problem (especially with no ABS or other dash lights originally).

I will be looking in there to clean contacts and can look to identify sensor then hopefully.

To update on status (because this seems wierd): Last night when I went out for errands the speedo needle was a 0 and didn't move for about 5-10 minutes. Then it started to move a little bit and around 10 minutes plus of driving the speedometer was working, but not extremely well. It was like it had to warm up to work, which did occur briefy yesterday as well. Then this morning when heading to work the speedometer worked, but not well. It does show acceleration, but does so slowly and does not adjust quickly. When the speedometer is not working the odometer is not (the trip odometer reset itself as well, if that helps), but the odometer works somewhat when speedometer is working (badly). A check engine light did just come on, but I haven't had a chance yet to run it. I have been having CEL issues with the second O2 sensor since my K04 and APR K04 software upgrade, so the CEL may not be anything with this.

Doesn't seem like a cluster or abs problem. I'm gonna get into the passenger front wheel well and make sure nothing was broke there where the curb was hit, but I don't see how something on that side could affect the speedo. Sure seems like a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and/or magnetized wheel/gear diff problem.

Here's the post I started on this problem specifically: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...1#post10368807

I've got a 2002 B6 A4 Avant 1.8T Quattro 5spd. K04 and APR software along with other supporting parts and mods. Just put in a refurbished cylinder head about a month ago as I had an unfortunate serpentine belt shredding to messing up timing experience this summer.
