Great thread! I'm about to install a 99.5 console on my 97; the guy I bought the parts from included 2 metal support pieces. Does the actual console mount to the car any different between the 3 consoles?

I was successfully able to install a double din facelift into my 97 12v Quattro.

Had a question; I used the grey/blue wire from the old rear defrost as shown above to illuminate the climate control. It is flickering, not sure why. Does it need another ground or can anyone think of a cause for this?

I just did the swap as well, and I'm having the same problem with the HVAC illumination. I don't know why, but it flickers. Any thoughts?? Thanks!

I figured it out, well, sort of. I tried a constant power source (the 75x) terminal under the dash to the left of the steering wheel and that worked. We both have 97s, so I'm going to say that on at least some 97s the grey/blue wires don't cut it.

    FAQ: B5 A4 / S4 Center Console Thread

The terminals under the dash have different options of constant power source needed. Either it be a terminal providing power at the turn of the key OR a terminal with power when the parking lights are on. If I remember it right, those terminals have 1/4 inch nuts. I used a dog-bone for that. The funny part about these power source options is this is how my head lights were originally wired to run as DRL's. It totally slipped my mind until recent. Fog light switches and climate controls work fine with out any visible problems.

depends which part you're referring to. The A6 cupholder/coin tray face is a different shape to the B5, but the container itself is the same, so pretty much all A6 switches have a different shaped profile.
Maintaining a 12 year old Audi is about as expensive as Charlie Sheen's coke habbit.

For those of you that have done this, what do you do with the CD changer in the trunk? The new unit has the changed in the head unit correct?

Bringing this back from the dead to answer this... but 6 disc cd changer connecter still plugs into the radio. You have the CD option on the radio and the CDC option. I spliced the CDC wires into a bluetooth adapter and put a blanc cd in the cd changer and it's really awesome not having a wire to listen to music anymore.

Does anyone know if the C5 ashtray fits in the facelift b5 s4? I would love to have a second lighter by using the c5 ashtray. Did this in my b6 with a b7 one and its great.

Ok so I know this is an old thread but I need to add some info for anyone who might find themselves with the same issue as me. I swapped a 01 A/C into a 1997. And followed the instructions here adding the dimmer wire to the 6th pin on the small black connector. This is not correct and when adjusting the brightness of the dash at night the A/C would flicker. This pin requires a constant voltage, and dimming is controlled elsewhere. As you can see in the wiring diagram, A6 goes directly to a switched relay, which is a constant 12v (the same wire that triggers many other things in the car when the headlights are turned on)

Frankly, anyone installing a 01 climate control in an older car should read this and confirm the wires they did are correct. I imagine there are many with it pinned incorrectly. Some newer cars may already have had pin C7 with a grey/blue wire. Looks like 1997 and older did not hence my issue.

    The fix is as follows.

Find the 7th pin on the beige connector. It should be grey with a green stripe. Remove it from the connector carefully. This pin must be installed in the 6th pin location on the small black 12 pin connector

In the beige connector, you must pin the grey/blue dimmer wire here (I used the 97 rear defrost dimmer wire as it's no longer used). This will fix any lighting issues and your 2001 A/C unit will dim properly.

I'm still going through the wiring diagrams to see if there are any other major differences, the interior temp sensor might need to be repinned to a different slot as well based on my first look. But the climate control still works fine right now it might just not be perfect at maintaining a constant temp.

The diagram below is what your final pins should be (note the A6 wire has a spelling mistake it says grn/grn and then further on gry/grn. It is in fact gry/grn.
