Just finish my first home brewed CF project...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So my friend is soon to start a kayak fab business specializing in carbon/Kevlar composite construction and he invited to show me a few things on how to lay my own molds and lay mat. I know its rather large but thats what i intended, shown is my boost gauge but there is enough space to put another standard size gauge in like an EGT or Air/Fuel gauge. The process i used was pretty standard, no dry infusion or anything fancy just wet mat and lots of rolling, no vacuum bag! anyways i like the look of it, im still in the process of putting a better finish on it because i really want it to look deep and pop like my wood trim but so far so good. Please do comment guys! Thanks

    Conor

PS dont mind the boost gauge it got dropped and is now dead :( new one is coming in the mail...

Thanks 7speed, i just upgraded to the newer style AWE electronic boost gauge and will be ordering a Podi Digi Combo gauge (Air/fuel & EGT). I hope to make a better better mold/tooling for a new and better pod that could withstand popping out a bunch more of these babies for some curious people. So input and criticism is much welcomed.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I hope to make a new mold and this time use only two layers of mat and maybe play with dry infusion maybe if they come out right I could get a few parts out to you all in AZ land.

BTW does anyone have a recommendation for a clear/gel coat? The stuff I used is UV resistant but looks sorta dull IMHO

I liked to use Klear Koat when I did my work, UV resistant as well, but still required some after work of sanding and polishing and some clear coat over it.

Not a big fan of the design, but the craftsmanship looks great. Well done.

there was a trial n error process since it was my first time, i sanded though the first lay when i was preping for clear (oops) so i had to do an extra lay, prolly about 20 hours work time total including test fitting and such.

terrific plcement of the guages. the in-vent style is tacky for my taste. im not opposed to bolt on dash or pillars posting though. but i give you props, 110% just because you did it all yourself.

Any sales here have to be run through a vendor.

I use West System epoxy on my wet layups. Then coat with a uv safe clear. I prefer the satin clears to the gloss as it makes it look much more natural. My resin infusion parts use a uv safe resin so they don't need anything but trimming.

design should be improved... since you were succesful with the fitting, you should really focus on the design. Design with things around it! concentrate on curves, blended edges and the height of it :P

    This^^. Great looking fab work.

But i would lower the height, and counter sink the gauges. Would look amazing then.
