i need a new center drive shaft, or to rebuild one. i see that blauparts has a rebuild kit for 399. any one know the prices of a new one or where to get one? it seems that 400 oughta be close to the price of a new shaft. i'm trying raxles.com but they seem to think i'm talking about one of the front axles

Try to clarify with raxles what exactly you need. A new propeller shaft is like 1300 bucks. Blau's rebuild kit looks like a reasonable alternative though, assuming you aren't paying for labor.

thanks guys, what i have right now is a general rattling and clunking coming from back end of tranny, right between front seats. only at low rpms and when going into 1st or 2nd gear. the noise is worse when i turn. also have a slight vibe from the same area at highway speeds. got under there and wiggled things a bit and that front cv is quite sloppy. labor won't be an issue as i'll do it myself. anyone have any experience with the one piece drive shafts (advanced auto link above) with any fitment issues?

The center bearing is ok? If it's just slop in the front CV joint on the driveshaft where it connects to the transmission, just change that.

Did you try wiggling the shaft bearing to check for play?

i didn't get to the bearing yet, but the front cv is sloppy. would the bearing wreak havoc and manifest as the play coming all the way up in the front of the shaft? those cv's seem to be kind of pricey, and if it's only a matter of a hundred bucks more for a decent used or rebuilt setup i think i'd be better off going that route. ( i do have to remove the heatshield to access that center bearing right?)

a loose driveshaft is a terrible thing. it happens on old bimmers where it will graciously inform you its center bearing is broken by banging into your floor until it gets fixed.

by the front cv being sloppy is it rotational play? up and down play? in and out(hehe)? it could have been damanged by a bad output bearing on the trans or pinion bearing on the rear. or age. they dont go bad too often under normal driving conditions, not sure about racing.

ONce was in the same boat... rediculous noises under the car out of the blue. Almost pulled the trigger on a new driveshaft but they were out of stock/backordered and I'd have to send mine in for a rebuild/core. So I pulled it out to find both front and rear joints were basically dry- the grease was hard and waxy. I cleaned them out didn't find any damaged balls or anything so I put some new grease in there and threw it back together. To my surprise thats all it took to fix it. and now almost a year later noise and vibration are still gone.... knock on wood

Blau has driveshaft parts as well. If you call them they have all the seperate parts available as well
