Ok so I really want to break the 350 hp mark so how with out buying an s6 or getting a supercharger? Apr claims this chip will do it.... Who has driven a 4.2 with a chip? Does it really make a difference? I'm planing on doing This soon just to see if it really works.. Any feed back would be great!

i had the stage 2+ on my b6 s4 and I definitely noticed it. It pulled better through the rpm's and was funner to drive. You just have to decide if it's worth the price for the little bit of power that it adds.

If you have a C5 A6 4.2 I think you will be dissapointed. I don't see how they can get that kind of power added to an NA motor by merely adding a chip. I notice they don't post a dyno for the 4.2 but have one for the 2.7T. They are just playing with air/fuel and timing so I doubt 40-52hp gains are attainable. I think the C5 S6 needs different manifolds, tune and cams from the factory just to get 40hp over the standard 4.2. On my C5 S6 I did a before and after dyno tune with Unitronic chip and gained about 12hp. If you do every possible mod sans supercharger you might get close to 350. I'm in kinda the same boat with the S6, not much to do with the motor after the basics unless you have $6-8k for FI.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, just giving my honest opinion. I'm sure others will chime in.

Yeah I have a c5 4.2 and I love this engine and this car I just want a little more power. I wonder how they get away with that claim in gain? Couldn't that be a law suit of some kind? Even 12 wheel hp is worth it to me but 50 would be amazing!

haha u will never get satisfy on HP, u will ask for 500HP when u gets 400. I was pretty satisfy when i bought my s4 and built it as stg2 350hp, but not after i drove it in two months. Im preparing for stg3 rightnow, its alot cash!!!!!!!.

My understanding is that the 40-50 hp gain is only achievable on allroads with 4.2's, as they have the S4 based engine instead of the regular C5 4.2. Since an S4 is 340 hp, this seems reasonable. I agree that there is almost no way to gain that much power on the regular C5 4.2 with just an ECU upgrade, and the APR website is misleading in that regard. That said, I will probably get their ECU upgrade for my allroad next time it goes on sale because 40-50 hp plus better throttle response blah blah whatever else they advertise is probably worth a couple hundred bucks.

No the site makes claim to the A6 4.2 and they are all the same base engine with different parts.

^The allroad motor is different. It's the chain driven version used in the B6/B7 S4's.

I think what they are doing is defining it a different way. They advertise 40-50 horse to the crank but by the time you lay that power through an automatic trans and to an awd system you probably are looking at mid 20s to the wheels...just food for thought

Mid 20s is still a good gain on an NA motor. I say it's worth it, I just want to hear from some one else that's done it.

A customer of ours said he tried it and gains were not measurable on his G-TECH.

    4.2 apr chip

I have the the ECU GIAC chip for my 2001 Audi A6 4.2. Unfortunately I don't recognize any substantial power difference. Even though I've heard apr is the way to go, I personally don't think it's worth the cost for the minimal gain.

that is true^^ if you were to do the chip, the lightweight crank pulley, with an exhaust and a tip chip then you may see some "feelable" gains, but is all that really worth 2 grand?

So does anyone on here have a 4.2 allroad with the APR chip?

By former boss has it and loves it. I've never driven it. Doesn't APR offer a "test flash"? The disclaimer here though is that you do not go back to stock, but you go back to a stock like program from APR.

If an engine makes 300hp at 6000 rpm and shifts, and the same torque at 7000 rpm, resultant horsepower would equal 350. Maybe they are just raising the shift points.

50+ horsepower gain on a normally aspirated engine making 300hp with just a chip gain is a pipe dream. Most gains I've seen advertised with chip only upgrades are +18-22 hp.

Now if you went the S8 route with cams, rockers, and free flow exhaust I'd believe a +50-60 hp gain.

I doubt it Increasing the RPM isn't a good idea, if you look at the S engines the redline is 7,000 rpm but they also have different pulleys to slow the accessories down. The S engine have a different valve train and a different intake.

All of these people will spend $500 to get the chip but no one will spend a dime on before and after dyno.... Does anyone have dyno results?

I have the APR chip on my car. I honestly can't feel the gains of the claimed extra 40 hp. If you're looking to get blown away with super fantastic HP numbers, you might be disappointed. What you CAN feel is away better throttle response and pull in the higher rpm spectrum. Surprisingly, after the chip, I did a roadtrip, I was quite surprised to see a slight increase in mileage on a full tank, so that was an added plus. I haven't tried the 93 oct program yet, so I can't comment on that.

We only run 93 oct down in these parts. Anyone know more about running the 93 oct apr program? I just wish some one would put one of these cars on the dyno...

I plan to dyno mine after the transmission swap is finally complete and before the chip tune. Granted, this is a homemade chip tune, I'm told he's an absolute wizard and it could be a viable option for guys who don't want to waste their time with Wal-Mart tunes. It'll also be nice to have the check engine light off after getting rid of SAI and the TCU.
