    Blew up my 4.2! HELP!!

Well I am embarrassed to say I Blew up my V8 4.2 in my B6 S4. I was on a track and about to pass a Porsche at the top of 3rd gear going to 4th. Some freaking how I put it in 2nd and the red line went past 8,000 rpms. It made an awful noise when you hit the gas .The oil presser stayed so the block isn’t cracked I hope. The car eventually turned its self off and now it won’t start. My s4 is in the Pittsburgh area. I need to find someone that rebuilds motors or a new 4.2. I still don’t know what I did to it yet. The Audi dealer wanted 4,800 just to pull the motor without even looking at it and 10,000 for the whole thing. If you have any idea what I did or who I can contact please let me know.

Moneyshift, that's rough. You mechanically over-revved the motor to probably around 10k RPM. The heads are probably pretty smashed up.

Look around for a used longblock, I've seen them at $2k. The swap shouldn't be all that bad, you'll need a garage and an engine lift to pull it out the front.

If you strip busted motor of all it's accessories you'll be able to recoup a good chunk of change, Alternator, Power Steering Pump, AC compressor, water pump, intake manifold, throttle body and the valve covers are all very hard to find parts and could be sold down the road. Also as long as the block is good you may be able to hang onto it to do a built motor, or sell it to someone who wants one for that purpose.

Do you have another car to get around for a month or so? It sucks but its not the end of the world, just work through it and you'll come out alright. If you need assistance pulling the motor member Littleredwagon has replaced his due to oil consumption issues, and has done motor pulls for JHM headers at least twice.

Most likely there was valve-piston interference issues.. basically the piston smashed into the valves. You won't know for sure until the motor is out of the car, but that's my guess.

For now the best bet is to hawk over the classifieds for a used longblock. You'll need a longblock if there is any damage to the heads. I keep an eye on the AZ, AW, QW and Fourtitude classifieds, along with ebay and craigslist. If something pops up I'll send you a PM.

Holy crap... thats like the time I rebuilt this motor from scratch, pistons, rings, etc for this kids 2000 jetta... He brings it back with it misfiring. I scope it to find a bent valve... he shifted into like 1st racing someone... then was mad at me that I must've put something in wrong lol. Good luck with your motor... If your inclined... and its not running... it wouldn't hurt to pull off a head and take a gander at the valves... if the valves are bent but the pistons didn't take any nicks or scrapes I'd say just throw some heads on it.

EDIT: Or build those heads and put them back on!

best bet if your strapped for cash look at junkyards, ebay, classified, find yourself a complete long-block, then find a capable mechanic to swap out the motor for you

i spun a bearing on the supra last year and i just picked up another long-block and since my built head was good i just had my mechanic swap in the shortblock then part out the rest, GL i know it sucks but when its back up and running you'll be all

^exactly, find a longblock and then part out what you can from the old motor. I know it really sucks, but it'll work out. Just don't do anything rash and take a slow approach. If you have another car or can get by without one and a garage I'd say start pulling it all apart now.

Tomorrow take the front bumper off and then pull the radiator support off. Then work on taking off the catback, driveshaft and front axles the next day. Get back into the engine bay and disconnect the wiring harness, coolant lines, power steering lines, etc, basically everything holding the motor in. Then get a engine lift and a few friends and slowly work the motor and transmission out, you'll have to remove the shifter linkage and disconnect the motor mounts. The day after get working on cracking the transmission loose along with your stock downpipes.

Then once you get the new motor start working in the reverse order and putting it back in.

If you get started on pulling the motor as soon as you source a replacement one it should take two weeks maximum.

Pulling the motor won't be easy, but if you take a week to work at it you can handle it.

Or just rent out either JoeyCurraco or Littleredwagon's services to assist.

^Nice lead, but that's a timing belt motor so it won't fit. You'll wanna look for a BHF longblock.

sorry to get off topic but what kind of wheels do you have on your car Redline? I've been looking for a clean 5 spoke for a long time. Yours kinda look like the ADV1s.

    Damn... That beyond sucks!!

A buddy of mine did exactly the same thing in his Porsche 914 a few years ago at Putnam Park here in Indy.

At the top of 3rd, he found 2nd instead of 4th. Not fun. It was a track only car though, not his DD.

I feel for you man. Best of luck.
