Doesn't look bad at all. I just hit 75k on my car and I think around 100k I'm gonna be taking the head off, sending it to get decked and cleaned and dropping ferrea valvetrain in there. Just because its already out. Then the fun starts

Okay that is pretty impressive for that mileage.

What's your driving style? I'm guessing you don't do a lot of short commutes or quick drives where the engine barely warms up?

That is correct, I drive 135 miles round trip to work 3 days a week. I also only use the castrol synth oils the dealer uses and it gets changed at the 8k to 10k mark. We will see how that works with the new build....

Naw man not bad at all.. Ive been VERY lucky with this early 1st production model A4. I don't burn even a drop of oil at all.........Its one of the reasons I will never sell the car considering all the trouble I hear about others with problems.... The only thing of inconvenience to me is that damn P0089 code which I hope gets taken care of with the new HPFP.

Thanks vizi, that seems to reinforce the idea that cars driven for very short commutes will end up seeing this problem much earlier vs long commutes.

Yup and i'm still on my 2nd cam follower..... I just changed it due to installing all new BT hardware, otherwise the 2nd follower is still looking good... It has the black finish worn off but there was really no major wear on it.... The test now will be to see how long the new follower lasts on the APR HPFP.

Hey man I am going to throw this around on a few forums if that is cool? Bobistheoilguy mainly, pretty big thread on deposits.

I am hoping mine is similar, I have a 05.5 as well, but only with 38k :). What is your build date (if you know if course lol). I do not drive on short commutes, about 15 miles each way to work on a highway. Not a lot of stop and go at all. BUT I am sure what is going to kill me, is that in the winter I have to let my car warm up before driving. I live in Alaska, and I am sorry, no way in hell I can sit in a car that has been sitting out side @ -15+.

Yeah, Thats no problem throw it around...... I also let my car warm up a bit in the winter..... At the least I let the rpms settle back down before driving it mostly for the oil to circulate(sp?) but also to warm up in the winter.... The build date i'll have to check on....

build date is on your manufacturer sticker which is found on a driver's side door jamb. if the sticker is stripped for any reason you can check the seat belt plastic plate. normally, you'll find the build date on there. At most, the date on the seat belt will be a month earlier.

can you remove the air guide and get a cleaner pic? look good but you can't really see the stem or the backside of the valve...it just slides right out.

oh yeah and next time clean around the intake manifold before removing it...

I would but its all been put back together......I can assure you though that what you see on the front of the valve is the same on the rest of it...... yea I know I should have cleaned the debris off the head.. Had to break the shop-vac out to clean all the crap....

From what i've read you can use somthing called GM valve cleaner and a pick of some sort to scrape the carbon off the valves while they are still in the car.. There is more to it but that is the basic idea that i've seen.

Ok can someone with better knowledge tell me if this is possible without noticing any ill performance effects?? This was quoted from the vortex site...

Hate to say this but maybe a failed valve or similar.
I will grab some images of some of the heads we have here to show a comparison. I mean I am in no way doubting you at all,I just find those valves VERY clean so excuse me if I am a bit curious.

I would think you would know if a valve failed. I mean our computers are pretty damn advanced. If everything is working the way it should with no codes, and if you have done logs with a vag-com and those all report normal, well then your car is running like it should.
