I never did use it much but it was nice when I did. I just replacd a b7 withe a b8 premium. I was surprised to see the wiper stick didn't have the tc. I just assumed it came with the base model. Is it a nightmare to install aftermarket? Is it worth it? Is it expensive?

it is super easy to get it without installing the wiper stalk:

Trip Computer on Premium Trim (U.S.): (Thanks to: Cabal_san - from AudiWorld Forums)

It does not make sense why Audi disabled the trip computer on the Premium trim - there are no hardware limitations, besides no controls on the wiper stalk..

    Enable:

    17 Instruments, Byte 1, bit 2

    56 Radio, Byte 9, bit 6

This adds and entry "Instrument Cluster" in the Car menu. Within that menu you will see On-Board Computer 1 and On-Board Computer 2. Within these menus, check whichever computer function you want to see on the DIS. Because the Premium trim does not have the wiper stalk controls to toggle between selected items, you can only have one item checked between these two menus. This checked item will be displayed on the DIS.

Thanks for the response. I am trying to decipher in this thread whether I need a vag or I can simply navigate the mmi and enter the codes you provided. In either case, once its enable, I can control it through the steering controls?

I edited this post as I did some background on VAG. I get it now. However, I dont want to buy one for two commands. I am not going to tool around with it otherwise so its not worth it really. However, would a card stereo installer have one and would they charge me 50 bucks to enable it?

Good point. Will they know what to do? Will they be voiding the warr? If they say yes, what are we talking in terms of labor.

haha i only say that so you dont have to worry about any potential warranty issues/money.

most enthusiasts will hopefully do it for free, if not a 6 pack .

    good luck.

ps- have you thought about doing any of the other stuff like windows going up and down with lock/unlock on key, sweeping needles, no seatbelt chime, and the others? i lovvve the windows via key feature and the others as well

Lol. Jersey isn't that small. But your right I should find out if someone close by has one. The other vag tricks like auto up and down are cool. 300 bucks on something you use once isn't worth buying.

$300, to me, was worth it for all the mods I have done... and it was also a necessity for my xenon retrofit..

I guess it depends on how much you use it.

    Nputer,
For me it would be nice to have the trip interface. I assume you use the mmi to toggle through the display options. However, I like to tinker but my mod days are way behind me. Always prefer to do something on my own rather than pay for it. Do you know if they sell used ones on ebay? I just know I will do the the few interested mods and then toss the vag in a closet....
    Thanks JT

Just keep in mind, that everytime you go to the dealer for service they will more than likely blow away your custom config when they hook you up to their VAS. So make sure you capture your setting prior to service, because when you get it back, everything will be nuked back to factory settings, and you will need to re-enable all the settings back.

What I don't get is why take a function offered on non lux vehicles and make it optional. Someone was trying to please boss on cost savings or something. So make the difference a convenience of stalk control vs mmi. Or just have 1 set vs. 2. I love this car and this missing piece seems petty.

    Hi,

Just got a 2012 Avant. I want the trip computer! My 2005 Passat wagon had one! Anyone in Tampa or elsewhere in Florida who can do this mod? The programming would be good, but I would like to install the stalk as well.

    Thanks.
    Louis
