    Cruise Control Problem?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
hey I dont know if this has been answered, I searched and obviously came up with nothing directly helpful to me so here it goes
I just came back from an hour and a half long drive and noticed that when I turned on my cruise it doesnt show up anywhere on the dash so I didnt know how to set it and reset it..I managed by messing around with it to set it once but then the car in front of me slowed down so the cruise stopped and I couldnt figure out how to do it again
so my question is its a 2000 s4 does anyone know if its normal for it to not show up on the dash and say cruise? or is that something thats wrong with my car maybe dead pixel somewhere? TIA

Do you have a blown brake light? Cruise is disabled if there is a lighting problem with the car.

To the OP, who cares?? You shouldn't need a light to tell you its in cruise.

I don't think our cars even have a "Cruise" light. Mine works perfectly and I've never seen a light.

no brake light problems to my knownledge
and who cares? when you going down 80 on the highway im not gonna be looking at the dial to see how to set the cruise on and set it to a certain speed
you have to remember I just got this car a month ago im still learning
but a light would def be helpful

Heres a little trick for all you guys to try. When I got my car my cruise control didn't work at all absolutely no response, so I took some electrical cleaner in a spray can with the little straw and shoved it into the cruise control switch and sprayed the hell out of it. Spray it so the cleaner is dripping out quite a bit while at the same time working the switches back and forth. From what I understand the contacts inside the switch get dirty and don't work. After spraying mine it works 100% perfect and has ever since. Give it a shot if yours doesn't work

isn't it pretty obvious when your car maintains the same speed?

Press the button on the end of the turn signal stalk while CC is set to on and it activates... very easy.

And if you have a problem looking at the cluster to set your CC speed, you either shouldn't be setting CC if your that close to other cars, or shouldn't be driving at all.

The one on the end sets it, to + move the slider to the left, to slow hold then end button down and release at desired speed. This can be found in the manual.

its always on unless you turn the switch to the off position on the stalk. I just leave mine on all the time and set it when I use it.. and I dont have a CEL so I enjoy having the empty cluster. lol

The most common problems with the CC system on these cars is a bad switch (on the steering column), and a leak in the vacuum system.

I have an issue every once in a while my cruise will just cut out. And my ABS and brake light just starting coming on. Checked the code and says; intermittent problem w/ brake light or something.

98a4 what you said could possibly explain my issue.

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

That sounds like it could be a switch problem.

did you stick the straw into the back of the stalk where that gap is?

I second the contact cleaner technique. I flattened the straw a bit so that the cleaner sprayed in a fan pattern. Then I just sprayed it into the cracks between the button and stalk and behind the sliding switch. I covered the console and dash as best I could and caught all the dripping cleaner in a towel.

I had several of the symptoms described above including logging a code for intermittent signals from the controls. This fixed all of this. Recommended!

Most auto parts stores have it. Last time I got it at Autozone. Radio Shack and electronic stores would have it too.

I know this thread is dated a bit but i wanted to thank you all for the helpful info about the cruise issues my S4 would only set cruise but resume and sometimes would kick off while set.quite annoying to say the least. A few good shots of contact cleaner later and it works flawlessly. I have been a long time guy, like 28 years and still own a couple but this is my first Audi I'm the second owner and so far quite pleased with it. Hopefully I will be able to eventually some useful info as well thanks again

The s4 is drive by wire, so a vacuum leak would not affect it like it would a 2.8 drive by cable. I have both and the s4 doesn't have the vacuum servo.
My right foot is the boost control.
