    brakes creaking

My brakes are creaking as I pump the pedal. Its most noticable when stopped like at a light. When I'm stopped and pump the brake pedal in and out there is a very loud and noticable creak that I can hear from the front wheels and feel in the motion of the pedal. Some posts seem to attribute this sort of thing to bad fluid, but it seems very mechanical as if some part is literally creaking somewhere on or near the calipers. The "creak" can actually be felt through the pedal as if the pedal is not moving smoothly once I push hard. I dont think performance is suffering other than the feel of the brakes. Any ideas?

I have it too. Not as bad as what your experiencing. But I have new rotor and pads, and I heard it's normal to have noisy breaks on the B7s

Are you feeling the creaking at the pedals or you can actually hear the creaking from outside the cabin to inside the cabin you mean? Are you sure the creak itself is not coming from the brake pedal? Fluid actuates the cylinders... so it could be bad fluid, or it could be air in the lines, or it could be your brake cylinders going bad.

I am getting this with my clutch pedal, but the creaking comes from the clutch pedal itself.

no the noise is coming from the outside but I can feel a corresponding creak or like fluctuation in the pedal itself as well. Its not that significant but the noise is pretty annoying and just doesn't sound right at all. It may be water in the lines as the weather changed dramatically here today (from being stored in below freezing to it being in the 60s and 70s) so maybe something happened with the pressure difference of the fluid.

a few questions: when was the last time you did a brake flush? when did you change your pads, rotors or how many miles on them.

I have heard a creaking sound as well before, I "solved" this by replacing the break pad clips stopped for awhile.

i think the last time the brakes were flushed was around june. The pads and rotors are both from when I bought the car 2 years ago but they were new then. I've had the car serviced at regular intervals of like 6,000 miles and as of june they audi claimed my pads were still at about 70% i guess meaning 30% worn. When I had it in last week they didnt say anything so I assumed they were still fine.

I've been experiencing this same issue. It didn't seem to become noticeable until the weather got a bit warmer. I get a metallic creaky sound (LOUD) when I'm stopped and depressing the brake. I can make it creak by increasing and decreasing the pressure to the brake pedal while stopped. I never hear it while driving at speed. It only seems to appear while stopped or very close to stopping speed. It's driving me nuts! I plan to have the service department take a look at it next time I bring the car in. Any others experiencing this? Any tips besides those stated above? In the meantime, I guess my baby will have to sound like a POS at every stoplight...lol

Wurth makes some stuff I will be using. ABS Quiet and some CU800 should do the trick ** when I replace my pads with some Hawk's on the fronts I will be using this stuff to quiet my brakes down. Wurth is OEM supplier to German auto companies so the stuff is awesome ** just some cheap ass German auto dealerships here do not use their stuff. LOL

yea what I have is exactly what you are describing TKKEN01. It is a metallic creak noise and yea it makes me feel like I'm driving a 10-15 year old car when I pull up to lights. Let me know what happens when you get it serviced if you go soon.

Your pads are mostly gone, and the rails were the pads slide on are getting gunked up.
You can alleviate it for a while by going to one of those high pressure self car washes and blowing the shit out of the calipers, but it will come back.
If you want, take them apart, grease the rails/slides and the back of the pads and will go away, but while you are in the replace your rotors/pads as necessary.

    :)

I have this "noise" too. On mine, it sounds like it's coming from only the front passenger side. It has always creaked (since new) whenever I was backing out of my driveway and I guess it wasn't that big of a deal to mention to the dealer, which I regret. Now it bothers me, with 25k miles. I feel it in the pedal a little bit too, as bskis1080 described.

Holy crap you guys are awesome!!! I HAVE THIS SAME EXACT ISSUE!!!!! Sort of sounds like one of those old mattress springs right?

Dealership was pretty useless in terms of fixing it under warranty. I went back there a few times and never got it fixed and now I'm sol and its driving me NUTS! They tried to tell me it could be my rotors because of a "lip" they have, but nope, thats not it because i just got brand new rotors and it's still there. What are we suppose to grease up on the calipers and stuff anyway? Maybe its one of the things that need to be greased up? I sprayed break clean on rotor and caliper and nothing :/

ya, that brake cleaning spray didn't do sh*t. although luckily the weather has gotten crappy and the creaking has subsided with the cold temps. i'm sure it will be back though...interesting what was said about the pads being almost shot. i'll have the dealer check them at the next service as well

Mine just lasted like a day or two and is now completely gone. I think it just had to do with the change in the weather and the car adjusting to the storage temperature change of like 50 degrees

Just noticed where all the creaking is coming from... NY and New Jersey LOL... I just heard my car squeal a little too... it must be from the change in seasons/temperature/humidity.

Quick update on this: I brought the car in last Fri because the noise was driving me insane. It had become intolerable with the warm weather and I had to get it checked. They checked out the problem for me and did two things. First, they lubricated the caliper pistons to se if this would alleviate the problem. Also, all 4 pads were 90% worn, so I had the dealer replace them. Problem is gone. Check your brakes guys, the pads might be in need of replacement soon.

I think i might need the lubrication part rather than the pads. Mine are pretty good

About 20k miles ago I had the creaking in my front breaks. I had the pads and rotors replaced (dealer had told me they were due before my next service). About 2 weeks ago my rear brakes started creaking. I had pads and rotors replaced on Friday. The pads and rotors were toast. As said above, definitely check your pad wear if you're getting the creaking noise (not the usual Audi brake squeal) because it could be a warning that your pads are on their way out.

Just a possibility, I did read that you had checked your pads and they were okay. I'm by no means an expert on brakes, just wanted to point out that the creaking I had coincided with needing new pads and rotors for both the fronts and the rears. Incidentally, I hadn't realized how bad my right rear inner pad was until heard the creaking switch to grinding as I ground down the rotor with metal to metal contact. Had to garage the car for a couple days and drive the truck while I waited for my parts to come in. That sucked, but it felt so good to be back in my car on Sat! :)

I know my rears need replacement very soon but the creaking is DEFINITELY coming from the front and it seems like it got worse for the summer.. It's driving me fucking NUTS!!!!!

I know, bad form to bring this back from the grave, but....

If anyone googles this and brings it back up. You aren't crazy. No it's not pad squeal. It is a creak in the caliper itself, at a standstill. Greasing the pins made no change. My pads have plenty of life in them. I de rusted the carrier and still have it. I am going to have to pull it again and look for another surface that is rusting and maybe pull the piston itself to see what the rust is like under the boot. It is crazy annoying on hot days. It creaks so bad it set off the check engine light for both knock sensors exceeding the limit!!!!

If you pulled and lubed the guide pins and the problem persists, I would inspect the pistons next.

It may be a good idea to pull the caliper and completely disassemble it, replace all of the rubber boots and seals, and re-grease the pistons (check for nicks!), and clean it all up along the way.

That said, manufactured calipers are quite cheap and it may be more efficient (in both time, hassle, and money) to swap in a pair of fresh reman calipers.

It creaks with the guide pins and rattle clip removed! It seems to be something in the relationship of the caliper to the carrier. I can take a pry and rock the caliper up and down to the carrier and it creaks like hell. So I am guessing it is something to do with pad to piston contact, pad to caliper or caliper to carrier. The pop is crazy. You can feel it in the pedal. And I am not kidding it set the knock sensors off several times. Yet on humid days, it's basically quiet. Rainy days, not there at all.

I think the creak is from the front inner pads that have the piston retaining clips on them.....I think the creak comes from the inner bore of the piston sliding against this pad retaining clip

I had this in my B8.

I took the rear left wheel off and sanded down the hub face where the wheel is bolted to the hub surface.

When I pulled the wheel off, a bunch of white dust fell off of the hub and I just ended up sanding the rest of the white dust/powder off.

Put the wheel back on and pressing the brakes at low speed and the noise was gone. Not sure how the hubs and pressing the brakes have any correlation but it worked..
