    Steering Vibration

I know I've read threads containing this issue, but has there been any resolve to this issue?

I took my car in yesterday for the 25k and complained, again, about the vibration in the steering above 50-60mph. My car is at the dealership right now, for the second day. In the past they have 'force balanced' the wheels/tires, but it doesn't really seem to help, as they've done this at least twice with no difference. Now I've got aftermarket wheels and tires on the car, they want to charge me to force balance the tires, due to them not being OEM. To me the tires are not the issue, since it did this in the past with the stock wheels and tires. However, they say that they can't/wont look any further until the wheels/tires are ruled out.

I've read about new control arms and that people have had them replaced by the dealer. Is this true? Is there a service note about this?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

from what i've heard, you need to go to the dealership multiple times and they need to try multiple things before you get on the list for new control arms.

If I bring this TSB to the dealer, will they be able to look this up? They claim they looked up any of the service notes, but found nothing.

I would like to know if TSBs are compatible with Canada? I am bringing in my ride to check out this issue once my winter tires are off. Can I bring this 2022179/1 TSB# to a Canadian dealership?

I just picked the car up after it sitting for 2 days at the dealer. No fix to the problem, they have told me that they will not go any further into the trouble shooting. They want to bill me to road force balance my wheels/tires, which I did not agree to.

I gave them the TSB#, which they said they were working from, but their number was 2022179/2. I took a copy of the TSB, which is all about the tires, nothing to do with suspension. This TSB is 10 pages, I will scan it in a few days when I get time.

Does anyone have a TSB# that actually pertains to the change of the suspension arms?

Yeah, well, dealers don't want to deal with this because they have to pay a portion of the approximately $1200 replacement/installation, and AoA reps that the dealers have to answer to will blow it off because they are incentivized for keeping warranty work to a minimum. So, I'm sure they couldn't find the number, and they're not going to "get right on this" and fix it for you. I've been blown off multiple times, as have many others, and I've about given up on this issue to the point where I'm just going to accept it because I love the car despite the fact that it has small yet agonizing issues.

there is a "tsb" covering this issue. the dealer first, checks the tires for imperfections, and then, if the vibrations are still there, they replace lower control arms( different bushings ). my '09 s-line had the vibrations and replacing one of my tires cured the problem. however, the dealer still replaced the control arms. my car has been vibration free. if your dealer is balking on this issue, hound audiusa endlessly, and they will come around. dealers that do not help customers are totally incompetent. consider using a different dealer for your maintenance.
    sincerely, don c.

Yesterday I was driving the car really hard and the vibration is now unbearable, the steering wheels shakes really bad while breaking at 70mph, I'm sending this TSB to the dealer ASAP

Ok, so an update on this 'situation'.

When I took my car in they wanted to force balance the wheels/tires and say they will not go further with this until they can do this, however since they are after market wheels and tires they want to now charge me for this service. The problem I have with this, is that they've force balanced the stock unites twice now with no help from it, this was done prior to me changing the tires and wheels.

I called AOA, here are some notes of the comments said between AOA and myself.

The rep that was on the phone told me that they refuse to work on the car until the stock wheels and tires are on the car. I pointed out to to them that the stock units were forced balanced twice and did not fix the problem, and asked "how does this not rule the tires and wheels out". All they continued to say is that they will not work on the car until it is returned to OE spec. This went back and forth for a while. I also pointed out that the dealer said they would work on it, if I paid for the force balance. Apparently it's an outsourced job for the dealer.

From here I asked, "what about the new control arms". I told them that I am aware of a service note that is associated with this issue that calls for replacement of the control arms. They claimed that they will not replace the arms or any suspension component due to after market wheels, and that altering the car from OE spec voids the warranty. Keep in mind that I haven't and don't plan to mention the fact that I have coil overs installed also.

I asked the rep "how do wheels and tires affect the warranty on the suspension". They told me that the wheels and tires are part of the suspension. I promptly asked them to explain how the tires affect the suspension, but they had no answer, as this was a 'technical question', but then followed to say "the tires are next to the suspension, so it has an affect on it". I kid you not, thats an exact quote. So, of course I have to give the smart ass response of "my bumper is also near the suspension. If I put on a different bumper, you wont work on the suspension?". They didn't see the humor, and responded to this saying it was ridicules.

I next stated "even though the dealer has already ruled out the tires, by force balancing the stock tires twice with no result, and that the same problem exists with the after market tires, obviously it's not the tires." and asked "why can't we go to the next step to find the problem." But of course I got the "we won't warranty a modified car".

They then suggested that I take this up with the dealer and see if they will continue work on the car.

Next I called the dealer, and service person that I need to speak to is not in today...shocking. I will try back tomorrow I guess.

Does anybody have the actual service note for the suspension arm change?

I fought hard for my control arm replacement, took me 6 months to get it replaced and my car is STOCK. I called AOA and they gave me a case number but that was for the newly designed power steering hose.
Here's the exact invoice that I got in writing:

Visit #1 (01/22/2010): CUST STATES THAT THERE WAS VIBRATION @HIGHWAY SPEEDS-ROAD FORCE BALANCE WAS PERFORMED IN AUG 09-CUST STATES THAT VIBRATION IS IN THE PEDALS NOW-CHK AND ADVISE
MISC SPECIAL ORDER CONTROL ARMS, CUST WILL BE CONTACTED ONCE ARRIVED
    580 INSP
13332 Needs lower control arms Made TAC, arms on order

Visit #2 (02/22/2010): CUST STATES THAT THERE IS A SHIMMY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, SEE RO#177944 FOR DIAG, TECH #580, INSTALL SOP PART
    CAUSE: FC
    MISC REPLACE CONTROL ARMS
    580 WA03

As you can see my invoice didn't include any TSB numbers for the control arms replacment. Hope this helps.

Why is it every time you go to a dealer they always have to get in a pissing match with you when you disprove their troubleshooting solution? I hate bad service...

oh! by the way, sorry I didn't offer any solution(s) for the problem, I just had to vent that frustration.
