Space for skis with seat folded?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey there everyone. First post on these forums, so hopefully I didn't brake any rules, otherwise please kindly let me know and I will re-read the FAQ.

Anyway, I am an avid skier and am starting to look at purchasing an S4 avant in the next few months and had a question I thought someone might be able to help me with. I was wondering what the length from the rear hatch to the front seats would be with a seat folded down would be. I have a few pairs of 190cm skis (about 6'3") and was wondering if they would fit inside with a seat folded down. I know they would go no problem a little crooked or whatever, but just trying to find out. Also, from what I have seen online the avant and 4 door are the same overall length right?

Anyway thank you so much in advance for your help, I have been drooling at pictures of all of your cars for some time.

those are some big skis! they might fit that way. One of my Ride boards is 168cm and it fits no problem with seat down.
BUT AVANTS LOOK SEXY WITH THULE BOXES UP TOP!.
There's a sticky with pics of thule boxes on avants.

No prob putting them in the back with either side of the rear seat down. But as kneel says, it would be better up top in a box or rack.

Yup, avants and sedans are the same length.

Hey guys thanks so much for all the responses so quickly.

Kneel: Yeah, I totally would want a box, but I will probably be stretching funds a bit when I get the car, so I would need to wait a little bit.

PNW: Awesome, yeah that is what I thought, I prefer the avant, but who knows I might not be able to find what I am looking for.

I guess I was just a little worried they would not really fit inside since they barely fit (like 3 or 4 inches to spare) with one seat folded down in my explorer and so I wanted to see. So far the forum has been an excellent resource for pretty much everything else I have been curious about so thank you all for the info, I really appreciate it.

    Cheers

I put my skis (183cm) through the middle ski bag, folding the seats down you definitely have to angle them and risk tearing the leather or a passenger. Middle ski bag FTW.
It's not a station wagon, it's an Avant.

Was going to suggest the built in ski sack too, but then I remembered how much of a mother f'n pain it is to roll that thing back up!

I just tested my skis in a B6 avant and there is no way 193cm skis will fit without both seats going down. The alternative is to fold down the 60% split seat and sent the tips of the skis between the front seats...

IMO the only good solution is a box. Once you drive to and from a mountain with a box holding all the snowy, dirty, big items you'll wonder how you ever drove around with that stuff jammed into the car. Keep an eye on craigslist.

yeah i just leave it out hanging out the back, i think i could prob complete a Rubix Cube faster than stuffing that sack back into a 3 inch cavity
i wonder how much the dealer charges!
evo_ski, rooftop box is indeed the way to go, make sure you get some locks though or your whole setup could grow legs

I've got 192cm and put them through the ski pass with the tips resting on the back edge of the arm rest.

I have 184s. They fit just fine in the ski sack. With the smaller seat folded, they fit at angle with a little room to spare.

I'd say ski bag too...BUT, as everyone has sad, it's a PITA to put back together once it's out.

Stick them up on top, though, buddy! The OEM set-up I have isn't all that expensive if you know where to look (ebay, craigslist, etc.). Mine was new, and was less than half what retail is. Best of luck getting a roof box that will fit 193's straight up (without angling them)

My 198s fit in my S4 ski bag no problem (with a little unobtrusive support from the armrest), along with a second shorter pair. It takes patience to roll the sack back up, but as I use it a lot during the winter, I just keep it unraveled until spring is over.
No way you're going to fit those in with just the left seat down.

Yeah I work in customer service there, I absolutely love it.

Sounds like it will be able to work for the time being if I don't get a rack but I would definitely like to get my hands on a rack at some point since it would make it much easier to fit all my stuff in there. I really appreciate everyones responses, super glad to have joined the forum, seems like I will be able to find out everything I want to know and more before I eventually make my decision on a car.

Gotta have room for the toys.... haha

And if you need help picking out a car or want to check mine out, let me know! We've got a good group of locals that meet up frequently and everyone is always willing to lend a hand for fixes or mods. I got mine a couple months ago and have learned A TON of stuff that is useful when shopping around/ buying.

I have no roof rails, ride big stix like yours (k2 at the moment), and you just need to put down one side of either seats and they will go diagonally.

Never, will they fit straight in. Im 6'7" and there is no way those suckers are going straight unless you want them dangerously close to your shifter
    I heart wagons.
