I've searced and searched but can't find answer for my dipped headlight

It is a rather puzzling issue. Here it is: I recently got a "right dipped headlight" warning and I went to inspect the headlight and sure enough, it was out. However, I opened up the hood and in my frustration I pounded on top of the headlight housing, and sure enough, the light turned on. It does this every time I start the car. I get the warning, I open up the hood and slam it closed and the light goes on and the warning goes away. I am no expert but I'm sure it isnt the bulb. Do I have some sort of short or is my ballast failing? If anyone has any experience with this type of thing before any input would be helpful. I may try to take the headlight out and check the wiring. But like I said, I am pretty novice when it comes to car repairs.

Do you have Xenons? You mentioned the ballast. If you do have Xenon's then it could be the ballast definitely.

Change the bulb to the othe side, while you're at it check the connections to the ballast, if the problem persists on the same side is the ballast, no doubt, if the problem moves (which I don't think it will) is the bulb. Good luck.

1-2x a year i get the dipped headlight on the DIS. In my case it has to do with the wiring harness vibrating loose and getting some contamination in there. I usually pull it apart, spray both ends of the connector with electical cleaner, let it dry then put the harness back together. It takes some pressure to make sure the harness is solid. Your issue might be different but easy enough to try before you start replacing stuff.

The headlighs are OEM. They are not HID. When this little blizzard/rain/sleet storm lets up I'll head outside and switch the bulbs to see if the problem persists on the other side. Thanks for the replies

If they aren't HID you don't have ballasts.. Where in the area are you; I have plenty of tools and have been getting to know my car if you'd be interested in some DIY help when it warms up lemme know..
