    Wheel paint question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just bought some S4 Avus wheels and want to paint them to cover up some of the scratches. I have painted wheels before and I normally clean, scuff, primer, paint and clear. I usually use these steps when I'm painting wheels to a different color. If I'm going to keep them silver, is it still necessary to apply primer?

Also, which wheel paint is close to OEM silver? Duplicolor wheel paint, Wurth wheel paint etc? TIA

duplicolor matched the center caps almost perfectly when I sprayed them. I used primer but I guess you don't really have to if you're just scuffing up the top clear/paint layer. Unfortunately after a few weeks, the color changed a bit and now they don't match the center caps which weren't done at the same time. SO if you do them, make sure to paint the centers at the same time too.

Did the Duplicolor silver get too light and is it really noticeable that the caps don't match?

No, the duplicolor became "darker", not really darker but the first two days after putting the clear on, the center caps fully matched without any problems. After sitting in my garage for the next 2 weeks (working on other stuff), they no longer match perfectly and are off in the hue of silver just a bit. Enough for me to say I won't put them on. I'm going to have to do the caps now and let them age to match....hopefully. That's why I say do the caps at the same time.

You can just scuff up the current paint on the wheels and apply the color coat on that, the paint should adhere without issues

Thanks for everyone's replies. I painted my wheels a few days ago. I decided to paint them w/ the tires on. How long does it take for them to completely dry before I can put them on?

All the other times I've painted wheels, I usually waited about a month b/c I didn't have tires on and I didn't want the tire place scuffing up my wheel.

if you leave them out in direct sunlight, the paint will cure faster. Did you use a rattlecan? It should say the cure time on the label.

I used Duplicolor. It was a little sunny a few days ago and it rained most of last night. Don't know what the weather is going to be like in the next couple days. They have been drying in doors.
