New clunking sound when going from reverse to drive...

Welp, just noticed this today. I was backing out of my parking stall at work, pressed the brake pedal, slipped it into drive and feathered the gas to get me moving. Not a second after giving it a touch of throttle, I hear a clunk coming from the front end and can feel it in the gas pedal of all things. I verified this twice more, both under the same circumstances. Slowly backing out, put car in drive, roll forward a couple of feet and "clunk".

Any thoughts? I'm not going to get a chance to worry about this a whole lot. If I stop and put it in park or neutral then back to drive it doesn't make any sounds at all. Sounds like there might be some slack somewhere? Thanks for any thoughts.

torque converter locking up hard. get the trans fluid flushed and replaced and new trans filter. that should clear it up. don't let it get any worse.

Thanks for the info! Is this a common problem with this transmission? It's nearing 65,000 miles now so was going to do the trans filter/pan gasket/ATF when I did the timing set, guess the trans will come a little bit earlier.

Does it really take 9 liters of 75w-90?

Well there are all kinds of other things that can cause a clunk:

    Steering rack
    Ctrl arms
    Sway bar links
    Brake pads
    Front sub-frame
    Drive-train mounts (snub/engine/tranny/center/rear diff)

Mine is steering rack related cause I only have the clunk when turning and stepping on the gas.

U didn't mention that u have a hesitation B4 the clunk which is what I would suspect with a tranny problem. In terms of mileage u are quite low. I have my girl friend change her tranny fluid every 20k and the car is perfect tranny wise. Either way the tranny was designed to go much much further than 65k. Any maintenance done to date on the tranny?

could be the snub mount needs changed...but i wouldn't think so. what OP described sounds like a trans. I would definitely inspect everything else first. changing the trans fluid on a TIP is not an easy task, or a cheap one if you don't have the right tools. it's not as simple as just changing the fluid and the filter, although i wish it was.

Some great discussion here. I've not noticed any hesitation in power delivery, but I've only ever tried "parking lot speed" tests so far. I'll try some more tests in the morning to see under what conditions it happens. No mounts have ever been replaced so I'll check those too while I'm poking around. Thanks!
