    Oil Change Woes :(

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey everyone, last night I did my 1st oil change on my 04 with the whole kit from JHM (LubroMoly/Hengst). Also changed to a KNN and got it all back together. But today everytime i turn it on it get a horrible noise from the chain, and no not the "normal" clang that all our cars make on a cold start, this is far more intense, then gone in a few seconds.

Is there any way that the chain is "getting used to" the new oil (found the old owner had a fram filter so oil couldn't have been too great) or maybe sometig else I'm not thinking of, either way its a noise that makes your stomach drop everytime you hear it.

    Thanks!

pretty sure it's due to the fact that your oil filter is empty and needs to fill up before oil gets pumped to your moving engine parts.

To minimize the time the engine gets starved of oil, fill your oil filter with as much oil as possible before screwing it on....

hmmm didnt fill the filter, but I have started it all day long. Should I still take it back off and fill?

BTW what is the specific amount I'm supposed to put in in Liters?, I went by the dipstick

We dont have the same oil filters as the B5. Ours are top mount paper filters. Its a cylinder than can't be filled with oil.

Something like 9.5 quaters, but you should go by the dipstick anyways because you may not have removed all the oil when you drained it.

    Right here.

this is your first oil change?

The timing tensioners are very specific when it comes to proper weight. Do you know what the weight of the oil was run by the previous owner?

The lubromoly that you refilled with is the correct weight (assuming you purchased the oil from JHM for S4 V8). how much new oil went in? Did you get most of the old oil out?

I would be half tempted to take it into a shop and get a diagnostic/oil change/full service. Assuming what you are hearing is timing tensioners, the fact that they got MORE NOISY after an oil change is very suspicious. I wouldn't screw with it.

I don't understand, are you running a K&N oil filter or the Hengst one?

running a hengst oil filter, the KNN was for air.

I filled about 8 liters (yes got the lubro-moly 5w-40) the dipstick seemed right to me. I may need to add another quart or so.

PS this is NOT my 1st oil change haha, just first one on this car. I'll go check the level in a second.

PS i only let the engine cool down for about 15 minutes, then let it drain for about an hour (really wanted to get everything out), i even leveled the car towards the drain side a few degrees to get as much as possible out

It should be in the crosshatched area between the two orange plastic nubs. If you were filling the oil according to the dipstick, be aware that after you start the vehicle it will consume an additional quart due to the filter cartridge filling once oil starts to circulate.

I was going to buy one of those kits from ECS... 8 quarts? Who are the kidding? Always buy extra oil. I buy two 5-qt. bottles when I do oil changes. My VW burns oil like no one's business so having extra in the garage is always a plus.

Yeah the JHM kits are 10L so you should have some extra for top-offs.
