    Problem with temp gauge

Ok about a week ago I noticed that my temperature gauge was dead. It hadnt moved at all, and my car was at operating temp. As I was getting on the highway, I opened it up in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Hit 25 psi and BAM the gauge starts working and moves quickly to where it should be. The next day, same thing, gauge was dead. Opened her up, and BAM the gauge jumps quickly to where it should be. It seemed very wierd that getting on the throttle would have any affect on the temp gauge, since they are seemingly un related. Then over the next couple days, I noticed the gauge was working, but was being very wierd, reading 1/4 temp, then half, then 1/4, etc etc. Just being sporatic. Heavy throttle didnt change anything this time. Now the gauge is dead, doesnt move at all, even when I get on the gas. I need to fix it this weekend. Where should I start? Is there only one temp sensor? Where is it located, somewhere on the head I assume? That would obviously be the cheapest place to start right? Does it sound like the coolant sensor went bad, or does it sound like a problem with the gauge it self? All other gauges work as they should. Car runs like a top, I know the engine is running at the right temp, so thats not the problem. So what do you all think?

Classic symptoms of bad coolant temp sensor. You should search more.

It is located at the back of the head, in the coolant flange. There are diy guides for replacement, but you failed to mention your year or engine so I'm not sure which one to link you to.

EDIT: Ahh, you added the info.

Just curious how you are sure of your actual coolant temperature independent of the dash cluster gauge.

What do you mean? How do I know that my engine is at operating temp? I know my car very well and it runs differently when it is cold as opposed to at operating temp. If thats not what you were asking, please elaborate

I wanted to know how you were looking at your coolant temps will driving. When you made that statement I thought you might have access to a scan tool, so I was going to suggest some things you could do to verify the problem you're facing.

You answered my question. You're just guessing or feeling you are reaching normal operating coolant temperatures.
