    First ride of the season!

Who else has a bike and can't wait for the snow to melt? I'm home for spring break this week and we happened to get some really nice weather today, so I de-winterized the bike, fired it up, and went for an awesome ride tonight. I love riding so much my poor B5 only got to burn 3 tanks of gas all last summer.

I ride my scooter almost daily.

warm gloves make 12 month riding possible.

I've been insuring bikes left right and centre lately.

Been thinking about getting a scooter this year actually. Dan, fill me in on what to look for.

Same here. Of course, in Fla, we don't get snow, just some sub 30/40 degree days. I finished up hardtailing my bike in January, so of course I had to ride it some. There were a few low 30 degree days that got rather chilly.

I've been looking at one too, but for my son and/or the gf. Either a Ruckus or this:

It's a Sachs Madass 125. They also come in 50cc flavors. They use a clone of the old Honda motors found in the old Trail and Passport scooters, so there are TONS of big bore kits and aftermarket upgrades for them. The 50cc start at $2K and the 125cc are $2.4K. Only problem, it's hard to find a dealer close to me.

Some people can't afford to plunk down 6-10K for a "real" bike. Plus, scooters get 80-100mpg. It really depends on what you want two wheels for. A quick jaunt up to the store or to work on back roads, or something to go for extended rides and freeway use.

Well, I have a "real" bike and I want a scooter, so I know that people get each for different reasons. :)

As for your previous questions, what do you plan on doing with the scooter? Just casual riding? Do you need storage? Do you want to mod it?

And how old would they be?? I'm sure some people could afford to buy a 10 year old Acura, but would rather put the same amt of money towards a newer, more reliable car with a warranty.

First and foremost, how far is your commute?
Rockin a 50cc is great for a lot of reasons, but it sucks if you need to do >10mi each way.
I'm swapping a 125cc in my 50cc because 50cc 4-strokes just plain suck for long rides.
anything over 50cc requires a cycle endorsement though, although it's good to have anyways.
If you're looking to buy something mod-able, get a Yamaha Zuma 125. If you want to leave it stock, look into to Honda Elite "110cc" (2010). There's a dozen other options, but those are great bikes for non-highway commutes.

Shit, i got almost 500 miles on the new Supermoto I bought in January. I've ridden any sunny day when it's over 35*. I alternate between the bikes so I don't have to winterize them, it works pretty well actually.

<3 Triumph and Husqvarna... and KTM too, but their parts are damned expensive (not like the other two are any cheaper I guess)

I JUST bought a new 2009 YZF-R6 tonight. It was extremely foggy and 38 degrees, but I drove it home 20 city miles anyway lol. I'll be looking forward to any weather close to 50 degrees in the near future :)

Are you looking to mod/upgrade them? Cause let's be honest, 50cc is gonna get you to 45mph at the most. From what research I did on the Ruckus, in order to go Big Bore, you need to take the engine apart and get it machined, which means it's kind of pricey. The next step would be to do a motor swap, and it's not direct (Wimbo, correct me if I'm wrong). I think you need to get engine mounts fabbed up.

Would you be interesting in something more retro, like a 50cc Honda Passport/Cub?

You could swap in a 125cc Honda clone engine for like 300 bucks.
