hello im new to the forum. I own a 2006 audi a4 6m/t quattro. and i bought the car used at 40K miles. it is currently at 56K miles and im not exactly sure what the problem is but the mechanic said this shouldnt be a problem with the mileage the car has. when i turn the car on it just idles, even as i press the throttle the rpm gauge just moves up but the engine does not rev. the mechanic says the camshaft could have failed. does anyone know what the problem would be? and i bought this car august of 2009 do you think i could get a refund for the whatever i payed for it so far? please help me out

not an expert on the drivetrain... but our cars have a serious issue with the cam follower... and if it goes... there is a big mess to clean up unfortunately. Someone will chime in w/ better info

That's really weird...sorry I don't have any information, I'm just spitballing here. Are tachometers not telling a user what the engine is turning at? So if it says 3000 rpm then it is getting some impulse that tells it the engine is running at 3000. The way it almost sounds in this situation is that the pedal governs the tach and then the engine responds...I know that can't be right...

the mechanic told me this could be the problem at the LEAST. i took some pictures of it but I dont' even know what it is. he said if i replace that and thats not the problem then i need a new camshaft.

can someone explain to me what that part it and how much it would be to fix

Well I guess he's thinking along the same lines as Freeflow...that is your HPFP. The cam follower is what people are having trouble with on our cars. The cam follower is located in between the pump and the cam. If you take that off, then the follower can be inspected.

That is the high pressure fuel pump, which is the hugest issue with this car. Search "cam follower" and you will come up with more answers than I can provide here. Basically, there is a piston on the pump, which is driven by the cam. Between the two, there is a thimble shaped piece of metal which protects the pump from the cam and vice versa, if that wears through (which it often does) then you are destroying your cam and your pump, basically causing thousands of dollars of damage. Your mechanic must not be very good, if he "thinks" it might be something wrong with your pump, and doesn't understand the huge consequences of this problem.

I can almost promise you that your HPFP, Cam Follower and Intake cam will need to be replaced. Generally once a worn cam follower actually starts affecting the engine the damage is already done and to late to just replace the follower. End of the world? No. Costly? Yes. I have generally seen this repair cost around the 2k mark. Now you could probably source a used HPFP to save a few bucks. But in the end what costs the most is the labor. If your mechanic is cool, maybe he can work with you there.
