Return fuel hose size and how to replace?

    Hey Guys,

I noticed a strong gas smell coming from the engine bay and I was able to track it down to, what I think is the fuel return hose.

The hose has cracks in it, and looks like it needs to be replaced.

From what I can tell, it looks like it's just a hose that connects from the firewall to a connector near the intake manifold.

The connection near the firewall has no clamp, but the one near the engine does.

Can I just buy new a couple of ft of new fuel line hose from like autozone and replace? or do I need to go to the dealership and order the part?

Does anyone have the specs of the hose? size and such?

Here's a pic of the said hose... (ignore the circled hose, i drew an arrow.. it's the bottom of the 3 hoses.)

Any input would help, searched a bunch, came out with nothing. Thanks.

    looks like 3/8 hose.

if you can i would cut off a piece and take it in to the store, otherwise go to the store, cut off a small piece and then go out to your car and eye ball it.

for replacement, fuel injection hose and fuel injection clamps should do the trick.

    thanks macdaddy.

Sorry but I can't have the car down. I'm doing the work in a public indoor parking lot and i would like to buy all the parts first before I start the job.

    Can anyone verify the size?

And on the firewall size where the hose connects, there is currently no clamp... Do i just pull/tug that bitch off?

Also when i unhook the hose, will fuel spray everywhere? should I depresurize the system first? (crank the car with the fuel pump fuse out)

Yeah, it should be just a standard 3/8"ID fuel hose. Your best bet would be to take the hose off and take it to the parts store and have them match it, just to make sure you're getting the right size.

Yup, just twist and work the hose off of the hard plastic line, but be careful not to break the hard plastic.

No, fuel will not spray everywhere. You might get a few drops leakage, but nothing significant.

There is a small pinch clamp on the hose where it connects on the hard line near the fire wall. I splice in a fuel pressure gauge on that line. I bought a spare set of fuel hose of a guy parting out his car for $25. I have heard that you shouldn't reuse hose line from other car cause of the potential for leaks, but I'm not scared. Just install the new lines and let the car run for a while and watch it to see if it leaks (keep in mind there still a strong potential for leak), also keep a fire extinguisher in the car just in case. As far as releasing the pressure you could do the fuse thing you talked about or just unscrew it and let it drip onto a rag, or just pull out the fpr and eliminate all pressure!

Before I get the spare set off the guy i bought some efi hose from auto-zone. Just take some of the hose up there or take a pic of it with your thumb next to it for reference on size, but make sure it's efi hose other wise it wont hold the pressure!

No, I was referring to make sure you get efi hose (It's rated at a much higher psi). Also the clamp that I was talking about is the one in the picture below. I replace it with a normal hose clamp, didn't know they made efi hose clamp, something new everyday.

(can't really see the pinch clamp but its very thin and blends in with the hose)

thanks for the pics, but my problem hose is the bottom return hose....

Just need a measurement of the inner diameter of the hose...

I might end up pulling the hose and get it fixed asap... don't want the engine bay to catch fire.. heh

There is very little pressure in that line, you don't need any special hose.

yeah, i noticed. Even with the car running, the cracks just weeps gas... still enough that i don't drive with the heater on...

Thanks, i'm just gonna grab some 3/8" ID hose and give it a go.

Jordan, i see that you are a vast distributor. Are you able to get canadians better pricing than ordering it directly from VAST?
