Why do people hate Apple so much?

I'm not an apple fan boy, I just prefer using macs since becoming a designer I've grown accustomed to using them.

Now, with that out of the way I wanted to know why so many hate this brand or their products so much. I'm not trying to start a Microsoft vs Apple discussion here. I simply want to know because everytime someone mentions apple or mac, almost instantly an Apple vs Microsoft/the world debate ensues.

I don't hate them and all my shit is PC based, except for my iPod. It seems like Apple products just work. I've had countless issues with all my PC/MS based equipment.

I just hate Apple because they make you buy into a lifestyle... they charge you way too much for everything and all of their products are so locked down you hardly have any customization options... You could do so much more with their products than Apple allows.

This is true, though the lifestyle part I think only applies to rich consumers, specially celebrities.

I don't hate Apple, I've said before that I'd own one if I didn't need to do CAD.

That being said, it is funny to walk around places like Fort Collins (CSU) and every coffee shop is full of MacBook users and one kid on an HP.

I'm not sure where you guys get your facts. Macs are very appealing to people who are less computer-savvy which is why I think most people think they're "less-customizable." There's so much cool shit out there for macs, it's just not as common (the majority of the world still uses more PCs than macs) The iPhone (when jailbroken) has some of the most potential and is one of the most customizable phones out there.

I agree they tend to be more expensive, it sucks. But if you can't afford them, don't get them! I don't go around complaining about the price of expensive cars. Audis, being WAY more expensive than the average civic, tend to have way more problems than said civic. But my experience with macs has been FAR better than my experience (and most of the experiences i've heard) with PCs. I really feel like the life span is way better with macs (in GENERAL).

1. it has grown to a status symbol/fashion accessory for the trendy. It was the think different campagin that made apple the rebel, the "hip" computer. Cool, hip college kids cant use a PC, are you kidding? God, if my brand-new iPod doesnt sync to my brand-new MacBook Pro, then people in the dorms will laugh at me! In all seriousness, when i see people with PCs, they carry them in cases and backpacks and shit, then take them out when they need them. When i see a lot (not all by any means) of Mac users, they carry their laptops in their hands and any time they sit down, they whip that bitch out and look at their widgets or some shit.

2. As the CNBC doc put it, Apple started with a cult following. With such a devoted following, they would bash PC for anything that they could, which bred the PC fanboys to bash apple, and it spiraled out of control.

I, for one, LOVE my macbook, but i do also miss my PC dearly.

quadruple false. i used to crack programs for PC, but now i shit the bed searching IRC and torrents for cracks that work. but really all u need is Lil Snitch. pretty handy, although that functionality is built into windows

It's not that they're not customizable, it's the fact that you've gotta go through different ways to getting that customizable feature.

The iPhone is a great example, why couldn't they just make these features available without having to jailbreak it? I think more people would have been more satisfied that way.

And I am one of those culy people, I've use Apples my whole life and love the simplicity of the operating system, but at the same time I absolutly hate all the people who now have Macs as a status symbol, just get your PC cheaper and be happy trendy hippy kid. I use and abuse my Mac Book Pro, as evident by all the dents in the outer shell and it still works just as well as the day I got it. That being said, I'm looking into a bigger internal HD because i only have 5GB left on my 200GB HD and I need more space.

I also how stupid apples applications and software is, numbers is the most confusing spreadsheet program ever and don't get my started on iPhoto. I do however like Keynote over Powerpoint but am proficient at both.


so in Conclusion I hate macs because of all the hipsters and trendy kids who have to have them now instead of those like me that see them as a way of life, not just some hip acesory like my watch. Also I've been through 13 iPods and only payed for 2 of them (my first one and when I switched to a itouch) can't mess with that kind of no questions asked warranty replacement.

its always an app, a widget, a program, something you have to add on to get the functionality you want. there is (to the best of my knowledge) no such thing as tweaking the OS to fit your needs. Hell, network diagnostics are a fuckin crapshoot, there is no "ipconfig /all" or tracert or anything to find out where your connection problem is, just "somewhere between your computer and the internet, a problem occurred."

Well I kinda left out the part about the "terminal" it's in the utilities folder. But you basically have to be a super-linux-script-writing-genius to figure out how to customize or do any network configurations. Our IT guy knows the ins and outs on the OS and you basically need years of experience to figure any of this out. The apps and widgets basically simplifies things for people, instead of having to come up with scripts.

There are games instilled in the OS, our IT guy was playing pong and tron from the Terminal app..

Yeah my buddy uses serato on his HP laptop, it works fine but he says he'd like to switch to a mac. Not sure why though.

I like mah apple. I had a PC before my apple, was a bad batch of laptops and shit itself after a couple months. My parents didn't want to spend a whole lot of money for a new laptop again, so I got my step dads Ti Powerbook . Installed OS X (was running 9) and never looked back. I feel pretty retarded using PC's now, the same as a PC user would feel using a mac. But my workflow is extremely fast on a mac and it has everything I need, works for me.

MATLAB runs just fine on macs, except the JAVA GUI is dog slow. SO I just turn it off completely and use MATLAB through the terminal, it flies then.

I don't really hate Apple all that much. I hate all of the stigmas mentioned in this thread so far just as much as anyone else, but it's undeniable that they are good at what they are good at and thus appeal to the right brained people of the world. You can't argue with that. They are great for somethings and if you really do need one for that, then by all means you should buy one. My biggest problem with them now is that when I look at a modern Mac, I just can't justify why they charge so much money for something that isn't AT ALL exclusive anymore. Their technology is no longer superior or unique IN ANY WAY that can justify the higher price tag.

The fact is that arguing with fanboi's about anything simply results in a 1st grade playground fight: "You're a nerd! No, you're a nerd!" It's bullshit. I know to all the Mac guys in this forum, I come off as a PC fanboi. My actual intention (as with car arguments often times) is to tear at the logic of Mac fanboi's ridiculous arguments that USED to mean something, but no longer do. Seems like most of you still spout off the same "reasons for superiority" that were maybe true 7-10 yrs. ago and then tout them as the perfectly reliable modern marvels of engineering that they most certainly are not. I would bet everything I have that as MS & the respective PC manufacturers progress along the line they are on right now, Mac asshats will still be pointing to XP to compare whatever the current version of Mac OS is against 5-10 years from now screaming "Superiority!" at the top of their lungs.
