    Question Which Water Temp Senor...

    sends the signal to the instrument cluster? I've got an intermittent Water Temp gauge reading issue. (it randomly reads cold and hot during operation) I've replaced the thermostat housing with included sensor. These are the only ones remaining;

    2 pin located at lower radiator;

    4 pin located on the side of cylinder head;

    the one on the head (4 pin) is the one that sends signal to the cluster.

    Both send a signal to the cluster, and both deal with coolant.

    green is located on the back of the head. a pain in the ass to swap out as space is limited and you can't see what you are doing.

    gray located on lower radiator hose. you can reach this from the front of your car and should be an easy swap.

    I have an intermittent signal from mine as well and got the part in the mail this morning, but have not put it in yet. Out of curiosity, what code did you throw? I only have a generic reader and pulled code P1298 and had to make a thread to get help about it:

    OldGuy:
    "P1298 indicates an implausible signal from the G83 ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor located in the lower radiator hose. It means the ECU is getting a signal from the sensor but it isn't congruent with the the expected range."

    My coolant gauge was going from the middle, to zero, then back to the middle...complete randomly. I replaced the green sensor on the back of the head...fixed the problem.

    As noted above and in an Old Guy thread that I can't find, neither sender directly drives the gage. They only provide input to the ECU which then sends signal to the gage as well as thermostat, engine management, etc, etc. Maybe Old guy can revive that info for everyone.

    Do either one of the above mentioned temp sensors drive the operation of Radiator Fans?

    Reason I ask; none of my two radiator fans are working, and engine temp is sky rocketting every time the weather is warm (link to thread) I ordered both and I will be replacing them in next few days; given they are the cheapest possible fix as opposed to Engine Fan Module or Fan Motor or Thermostat....
