    2000 S4... should I buy?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

    New to the forum here,

    I can possibly buy a 2000 Audi S4 with a 6 speed, 135,000 miles for 3000 grand.

The down side is the car can only be driven a little ways before it overheats... I was thinking a headgasket at first BUT it does not leak any coolant. When warmed up, the coolant will gush out of the overfill. The waterpump was replaced 4000 miles ago by a Audi dealer so that is ruled out.

Anybody think I should buy it and fix it up?

    any help would be appreciated

If you know anything about these cars yes.

If you don't know anything about the 2.7t engine and all its problems.. no, you have no idea what you're getting into.
EPL Stage 3 with a bunch of other crap.

$3,000,000 seems a bit much for a 10 year old car...

    ^^^LOL

but to OP, these angine are very expensive to work on unless you do the work yourself. If you have no idea how to remove a cylinder head or know your way around these motors, dont get it. If you do or know someone that does, go for it.

I still don't exactly understand this type of comment. You have to start learning at some point. You weren't born with the knowledge of problems the 2.7t has.

OP, for 3 grand that's a good price for a running S4. Worst case scenario if you couldn't fix it, you would get your money back. But 3 grand is a good place to start.

Could be as simple as a stuck thermostat.

I'd say no. Once a motor has been overheated, its never the same. Do you have any other info from the PO on what has been going on? The fact that the waterpump was replaced before makes me more suspect, chances are something went wrong, it overheated that time, possibly the pump, and it took out the head gasket out. If you aren't doing all the work yourself you are WAYYYYY better off getting a well running car for a few thousand more.

If you are still considering it, take it to a good shop for a good assessment, and ask them to put their emissions tester with the coolant tank open, if the headgasket is gone, it will register hydrocarbons coming out.

I believe the comment was ment to mean the S4 is not a good platform for a beginning wrench turner, because it is far more complex than many other setups. The heating system in the S4 has more electronics than my Honda has under the hood. lol
