It would appear the engine block was modified to fit the starter it is not a direct bolt up as an extra hole was drilled into the block.

    Compare the 2 images.

As I replied on another Forum... I noted that i needed to make the hole to allow the upper part of the starter bolt to the tranny. This is not a Bad thing. or even going to affect the engine at all. When you take a car not design for manual Sometimes you have to make adjustments. this is not the first time Someone has to modified something to make is fit. when you buy Rs6 turbo for S4, you have to completely change the turbos to make them fit. No one ever says anything bad about that.

I never said nor implied it was bad, just that term "Bolt On" was not correct.

BTW How many bolt holes line up on the RS6 engine and S4 trans?

I doubt the 034 piece would work the A8 flexplate and RS6 flexplate quite a bit different.

You also have to take into account any adapter plate used.

I think he may have just been refering to how you said completely bolt on, and he is saying drilling the hole isnt exactly "bolt on". I dont think he meant to say anything was bad about that....that's what i got anyways. Keep up the good work!

    Do some searching on RS6.com.

The 6spd RS6 I built was recently sold after I put about 12k miles on it.

It was a great car/driver and I'm planning on doing it again soon. Just bought an S6 wan plan on swapping out the RS6 drivetrain and adding the 01E.

This is exactly what I am hoping to do in the next year or so. Purchase an S6 and manual conversion.
Since you've done a manual conversion already, I've got a few questions for you, if you dont mind answering.
Can we use just any 01E transmission? Are they all the same from the inside out?
Most of the conversions I saw were done using 01E on 2.7T, and if I remember correctly S6 came with a manual version in Europe as well.
Would that be a better transmission to use? Or that IS the 01E tranny on the S6? What about the 0A3 transmission used on b6/7 S4s?
    Thanks in advance, Cheers

All 01E 6-speed manuals are the same. The internal ratios may differ, but the castings are the same, at least in terms of bolting to the block, and bolting on mounts. There are different mount options depending on what chassis the trans is destined for.

The 0A3 6-speed manual from the B6/7 S4 will bolt to an 077 V8, but it uses a different mounting system to fit the later platform. It uses a DTS-style single cradle, that bolts underneath the trans case. I'm not sure if the casing has provision to bolt B5/C5 brackets to the sides.

If you use the correct flywheel and clutch, you won't need an engine-to-tranny spacer either. The Audi engine hangs far enough ahead of the suspension as it is, you certainly don't want to add any more.

The 01E external dimensions are similar, there are a few subtle differences throughout the years however. Early cases (pre 1998) have the bolt pattern on the bell housing differing by two bolts and a dowel pin. The later transmissions also have provisions for the heat shields installed over the front axles, versus below for the earlier transmissions.

The gear ratios also differ as well, there are 3 choices for final drive and several other choices for 1-6 ratios.

I've put together a swap kit using a rebuilt tdi transmission for ~$3500.00 shipped for a few other list members. If you go the used route keep in mind that the 01E's are pretty problematic in regards to the 1-2 collar and fixing that costs ~$1100 plus labor.

The 0A3 is a different transmission entirely.. As Siena stated. The trans mounts differ, the shifter differ, there is only one style of output flange on the axles, the bolt pattern differ slightly and there are no provisions for a speedmeter pickup on the 0A3.

Why not just use a b7 rs4 trans?

No provisions for C5 style transmission mounts
    No provisions for speedometer sender
Inner axle joints are the later small tripod style, limiting choice of axles.

I could have sworn I saw someone in Australia swap in a B7 RS4 Trans.

    Not sure what he modded.

Don't get me wrong, it's possible to put the 0A3 trans into an earlier car you just have more issues to deal with. Rumor has it the famous Sportec car that was illegally imported used an 0A3.
