Coolant Gauge

So today I was changing my oil and when I got it off the lift I noticed that the coolant temperature gauge was sitting between the first two lines with the car cold. When the car was warmed up it went between the middle line and the following line. Normally when cold it sits on the first line and when warm its on the middle line not between lines. I let the car cool down and checked the coolant and it was a little low but not much so i put some more coolant in but same thing still. When the car is off it goes all the way down. Any ideas?

Would it make more sense if i said that the starting and ending positions for the gauge have both moved forward from where they should be.

Well its back to normal now but i'm going to keep an eye on it. Thanks for your help.
