    Metal window trim oxidized

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The metal trim around the windows on my B6 S4 is oxidized. Previous owner was responsible for this. It's definitely cloudy with some weird rainbow effects. I tried using Klasse All-In-One and Meguiar's ColorX (both are oxidation removers) but the oxidation will not come off.

It's my understanding this metal is clearcoated, so it should be treatable like other painted surfaces. However, when using the Klasse, the cloth I buffed with came out as a black color...as if the metal is not clearcoated.

Can anyone shed some light on how to deal with this?

same happened to my a8l. it is non-treated aluminium from what i have been told. I have fixed it, and sealed it and it will still come back over time. Probably really needs to be buffed down far.

So it is NOT clearcoated after all. Sounds like I need to just tape off around the metal, whip out the orbital buffer, and put some metal polish on there.

Thanks. Looks like I need something more abrasive. Was hoping to fight it chemically but that may not work. I have some ScratchX that's worth a shot. Otherwise, it's time to break out the cutting agents.

Have a B7 S4 with the same problem, dying for a solution. I suspect sanding aggressively with 1500+ sandpaper will remove the haze (and clearcoat), and then you could repolish, but it will be a pain to do on the car (trim is hard enough to remove that if you remove it you might as well replace with new). Of course if you remove the clear coat, you're going to have to protect it or polish constantly.

Can anyone confirm a solution to the "rainbow, hazy, cloudy" looking trim that brings it back to polished rather than a brushed look (like you'd get from sanding)?

Read above. Click my link. It's not clearcoated. EDIT: saw you already commented on that post.

Don't sand it. Hit it with an abrasive polish, then finishing polish. Couple coats of wax and you're good to go. Try this before you go at with sandpaper, that should be a last ditch effort.

Yeah I will mask off and go to town with with a 105/205 combo, hope it improves. I will document the process since I know there are a lot of people with shitty looking trim like mine and this might be the wonder cure we've all been looking for.

Reviving this because I finally bought some M105 and went at it yesterday. There was virtually no change.

I am contemplating going after this with 0000 steel wool. Thoughts?

What do you mean, exactly? I used the M105 by hand several times and there was zero change.

I would tape it off and use a PC or rotary see if that works also by hand you need lots of pressure.

I have a random orbital, it's too awkward to hit those strips since they're angled and thin.
