    transmission synchro ?

My first and second gear need to have a synchro rebuild but my mechanic told me that he would look for a rebuilt trans. Because the labor and parts for a rebuild would not be worth it. Is this true should i go for a rebuilt trans or just cough up the money for a rebuild. Also if any one knows of a place where i can find a trans that would be much apprieciated

I know only two places. try this http://www.importperformancetrans.com/ http://www.advancedautomotion.co/index.php?cPath=65_91
If i was in your place i would buy the synchro kit from JHMotorsport and do it myself. it is not hard. The kit comes with a video so it is easy.

i disagree, but for certain reasons that were constants in my day to day.. i myself, a technician of 15 years, found a rebuilt tranny that the previous owner had just installed the jhm kit himself. i paid 1650 shipped for it.. which is much better than 1150 for the kit and doing the entire teardown myself. of course, i work on cars 45 hrs a week. i wasnt looking for another job to last me a week on the side, most of the time that i would have spent learning and understanding what i was doing. now if your day to day job doesnt include working on cars, and you work with flowers or the stock market, then maybe its something youll want to tackle. you have to heat some of the gears to get them apart and such, so keep that in mind.

id look for a freshly rebuilt one. i promise, there are some stage 3 owners out there with freshly rebuilt ones that are wanting to get rid of either their cars or the parts there'in.. just be patient..

I've rebuilt the O1E before, and while you don't need to heat anything, you will need a shop press, some really good C-ring pliers, and a few different spacers for the press, and other random tools for the job. I do work on the B5/C5 chassis for a living, and rebuilding the trans is a lot of work, but it's worth it if you can save several thousand dollars in labor for someone else to do it.

Keep in mind that the labor just to remove the trans is about the same as an engine pull. Then the labor to rebuild the trans is another 8 hours, or so. In total, you'll probably pay around $2000-2500 in labor, plus another $1150 or whatever for the rebuild kit. If you buy a rebuilt trans, you'll still pay ~$1200 for the trans, but you'll save about 1/3 of the labor cost. The downside to that, is that you don't know the history or the true condition of the trans. If you rebuild yours, you know it's got fresh parts, and you'll know the condition of the gears, etc.

Financially, you'd be better off doing what bigern45 said, but you'd probably have a better trans if you rebuilt yours.

I pretty much have all those items, my trans is basically trashed at this point, 1-2 grinds sometimes, 3rd is weak and also grinds some times, 5th has a horrible whine and even 6th is starting to whine a bit. Given that you have all the tools how hard would you rate the rebuild? I've done basically everything short of a trans rebuild, so I'm not really afraid of tackling it, just of getting stuck with a big learning curve.

Well, difficulty is completely relative, but I would say that if a motor pull/turbo swap is about a 5 out of 10, then a trans rebuild is probably about a 7.

Keep in mind that you'll need to replace more parts than just what is included in the JHM rebuilt kit. The kit includes the synchros and the 1-2 shift collar, etc. Based on your description, you're going to need to replace the synchros and shift collar, as well as the 5th and 6th gears.

if you pull the trans yourself and bring it to a shop, the labor costs go down significantly.
    My WTB List:
-Sport (all black) shift surround for 6MT
-Sport (all black) ash tray cover
