id look for a freshly rebuilt one. i promise, there are some stage 3 owners out there with freshly rebuilt ones that are wanting to get rid of either their cars or the parts there'in.. just be patient..
I've rebuilt the O1E before, and while you don't need to heat anything, you will need a shop press, some really good C-ring pliers, and a few different spacers for the press, and other random tools for the job. I do work on the B5/C5 chassis for a living, and rebuilding the trans is a lot of work, but it's worth it if you can save several thousand dollars in labor for someone else to do it.
Keep in mind that the labor just to remove the trans is about the same as an engine pull. Then the labor to rebuild the trans is another 8 hours, or so. In total, you'll probably pay around $2000-2500 in labor, plus another $1150 or whatever for the rebuild kit. If you buy a rebuilt trans, you'll still pay ~$1200 for the trans, but you'll save about 1/3 of the labor cost. The downside to that, is that you don't know the history or the true condition of the trans. If you rebuild yours, you know it's got fresh parts, and you'll know the condition of the gears, etc.
Financially, you'd be better off doing what bigern45 said, but you'd probably have a better trans if you rebuilt yours.
