Question Using 17 inch spare with 19 wheels??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Im planning on upgrading to 19 inch VMR wheels soon with 245/35/19 tires.

If I keep my factory spare tire 235/45-17 and get a flat, would I still be able to use it as long as I drive slow to the next car place to get my tire fixed?

without a problem. You don't even have to drive slow, just don't take any crazy turns.

I have 18's and my drivers side front went flat, i threw on my stock sport 16" and drove 15 miles home with no problem at all, besides looking stupid.

It won't be great as a long term, but it will definitely get you where you need to go to fix it. Think about all the other people in the world who rock the little donut wheel as opposed to a full sized spare. If they can get away with those disproportioned wheels, then you can easily rock the 17" for a short time.

i wouldn't recommend it if the outside tire diameter is more than a 3% difference. other than that, you'll be fine.

If you're quattro, you will not be fine. Get a full sized spare to match your 19's or join AAA for roadside assistance. You'll burn up your differential pretty quickly with that drastic of a difference in rolling diameter. Audi specs require no more than 3/32's of a difference between treads.

the whole 3% thing has been blown out of proportion . there is no way in hell they, (meaning audi, part of VW, one of the largest companies in the world), would make a car that cannot drive less than 100 miles with a donut . the internet has completely strewn this beyond what it really is . no need to buy AAA / buy a 5th wheel. . you can do it it . . these forums have turned it into a big deal, when it really is not

just dont do it as a long term solution

Some people have the wrong misconception, it is NOT the size of the wheel(17", 18", 19") that matters as long as the wheel/tire combination has an outer diameter within 3% of the factory recommended size. This is given that you have not installed a wheel/tire combination that is different than the original diameter.

this. Get a meatier tire on that 17" wheel. Or get a less meaty tire on that 19, since what you have now is pretty big for 19's if I'm not mistaken

This. I currently have VMR 19's and the 17" spare which has NEVER been used, knock on wood. What I would like to do is buy another V708/tire and swap it out with my most worn wheel which I'd then use as a spare. Should have done that when I got new tires 3k ago, but was tight on cash.

    Go here: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

235/45-17 is nearly identical outside diameter to 235/35-19 as others have said. Revs per mile is 796 vs 792. You'll be more than fine. No reason to get a 19" spare unless you like spending money for no reason. The ONLY reason would be for either looks, or if you had a big brake kit that the 17" wouldn't clear.

The B8 comes with a space-saver spare wheel & also comes in Quattro flavour, so people saying it's not good for the Quattro should consider why Audi have chosen this route. However, you shouldn't go over 60mph on a space saver.

In your case a 7x17" spare will be fine until you get your 19" back on.

Im probably going to go with new 18 inch and keep the spare at 17

Thanks for the responses, Im sure driving 5-10 miles in the rare event I need to use the spare wont hurt anything

Exactly, this way the spare is used as it was intended, for emergency purposes which can happen more than just once.

I ran a 17" UltraSport Summer directional on the WRONG side as a spare, in the middle of winter, with my 19" setup.

If you don't need both hands on the wheel, then you're NOT driving.
