2001 to 1999 engine swap possible?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I own a 2001 A4 1.8T Quattro that was rolled and totaled. The engine is still good in it, so, being told that the engines are interchangable, I bought a very nice 1999 1.8t A4 Quattro, that had a blown engine. Well, I just received a call from my mechanic, and apparently if they are interchangeable, there are many changes that would need to be made to the 2001 engine prior to being able to making it work in the 1999. Please tell me that someone has some good advice.
    PLEASE.

if i'm not mistaken the harnesses between the two motors are different..
different coil packs.. and the 99 aeb motor doesn't have a knock sensor

The 99 is a DBC (nDBW) and the 01 is a DBW. Which is Drive By Cable and Wire. So basically, you're gonna need to pretty much gut everything from the one car and place it in the other. You can get more into depth with it and make the necessary modification to convert the engines accordingly in order to make the swap easier, but that is knowledge I do not posses. Hopefully somebody who knows will chime in.

Basically the 99 is what is referred to as a pre-facelift B5 A4 while the 01 is a facelift B5 A4. If you have access to the entire 01 you'll want to swap the engine, engine wiring harness, ecm, and basically the entire interior (mainly the dash wiring harness, the gauge cluster, the a pillar airbags, and the gas pedal, but by swapping everything you get some nice upgraded bits such as the illuminated dash vents and a nicer center console layout). Assuming you swap all of those items the facelift cars do have some different items that if undamaged you might want to swap over as well such as...

    1. Taillights
    2. Front bumper grills w/ foglights
    3. One piece headlights
    4. Door sill plates
    5. Larger brake master cylinder
    6. Manual transmission shifter

I'm also under the assumption that both cars have the same transmissions. If not you need to know that the Automatics (aka Tips) have a different final drive ratio then the Manuals and therefore you'll need to make sure you have the proper rear differential with the proper transmission. Also, the Tip has its own control module and wiring and could complicate the process a little.

    1. Don't do it. They have different chassis wiring. Your gauges, electrical system, & ecu will not work.

A place between here and there

How much are you trying to get for the blown cylinder head, from the 99?

And you would need to do more than just swap the engine. You would need the ECU, engine harness, sensors, throttle body, pedal asembly, and not sure what else.

it is in fact interchangeable.. check this for some more info on it. read almost all of this thread it will tell you the differences of what sensors etc you would need to have changed.

there is no need to have to swap over everything (wiring harnesses etc) in the 01 to the 99 just because of the dbw and ndbw differences. you would just need to use almost all the 99 components with the AWM engine.
