    cluster repair in edmonton (area)?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i just received a damaged cluster from ebay - looks like a shipping problem. the instrument needles aren't 'resting' on 0, they are facing directly down (or in the 6 o'clock position). dealer says this is causing the readout to be incorrect. duh :p anyhow, i am hoping this is simply a matter of opening up the cluster and repositioning the needles. is there anybody in edmonton (or calgary) that could help out?

was the box damaged ? what cluster is this ?
Needles pointing downward sounds fishy , they can't move downward on their own, unless someone really through the box on the floor and needles moved
try to connect to your car and turn ignition on without the turning the engine, the needles should reposition to original setting, if not PM I can help you

hi thanks for your response. it was a cluster with the color DIS - unfortunately im a bit useless with DIY mods so i just had the dealership look at it. because it wouldn't function properly they didnt want me driving home so they put my old cluster back in. i really wish i could test it myself but i don't know how to remove the cluster from the dash as it stands. the packaging was pretty roughed up when i received it, so i think it may have been significantly jolted . talking to canada post tonight...

so we are talking more about B6, B7, A4 ? You wanted to installed cluster with color display, did you buy it from Ebay ?
Did they tell you at least when they install it that it was powering ? What is the part# of the cluster ? the sticker is located on right top side

definitely a B6 color cluster from ebay. here is how it went down:
bought the cluster, took 2 weeks to ship (which even canada post admitted was strange), it arrived in a box that looked like it had been run over by a bus. i didn't notice any damage to the cluster itself, as it was secured in bubble wrap and being the oblivious newbie that i am to audi, didn't notice anything wrong. went to the dealership, they put the cluster in, adapted it but when they tested it, the pins weren't responsive. they did a 'sweep' test and found that none of the needles were responsive to that. they pushed the accelerator, and the RPM needle moved a lil' bit and to their surprise, the fuel needle moved higher as the accelerator was pushed, and went down as the car decelerated. i mentioned to them that the cluster may require a gala wire to be brought in (as per other people's problems with the retrofit) but they assured me that even if that WAS the problem, the needles were facing directly downwards, and needed to be re calibrated. all this in three hours of shop time, i.e. close to $400 - all to be told that the new cluster was broken, and my old cluster needed to be re-installed. after a lengthy discussion with the shop manager they agreed to knock some $$ off my final bill... but now im somewhat gun-shy in terms of experimenting. if i had the SKC and was a little more comfortable taking the dash apart maybe id do it myself; however, im also getting slammed at work and suddenly my car has fallen low on the priority list.
now in a dispute with canada post...
now looking to send the cluster to ontario for diagnostics
now looking for somebody who can install and adapt the cluster at a flat rate

    part number to follow:

The cluster you bought from on Ebay, was it new or refurbished, and on the photo did it showed with pointers at 6 oclock, and was the mileage reset to zero ?
Contact your seller and tell him you have problems with the cluster I would open dispute with PayPal. The more information you post I start to doubt that the shipping was the cause of the failure, if the mileage was reset I can 90% sure that who ever reset the cluster damaged the eeprom software , this happens when someone uses cheap tools to adjust or reset mileage on the cluster, I have been receiving a lot of questions like that recently from customers who bought clusters on Ebay or other sites craiglist, and have problems with them working either can't program or partially operational clusters, I have tested number of them and found circuitry chip basically exploded or corrupt beyond repair, only way is to either re-flash the software or repair the damage with new re-flash
do you have access to VAGCOM ?

i do have a genuine (fully functioning) vag-com cable! unfortunately, the new /refurbished (ebay) cluster is out of the vehicle and im unable to tell you anything useful about it, which is why you asked me about vag im assuming? when i get home for the day i can PM you a part number.
i imagine that in order to progress a paypal dispute id have to have material proof that the item was shipped non-functional? is this something you are able to do? truth be told, id rather have the cluster fixed (at the vendors cost) than sent back - i really need a metric navigation cluster!

I realized that new cluster is out of car, I wanted to check the version of the cluster from vagcom screen, and immobilizer number, and check against the one I have list from customers clusters
With Paypal you shouldn't have issues if the cluster you bought within 60 days , having proof from dealer and if you want my help I can help you out
