    Fuel Pump Questions TQM

Guys I've been trying to get my stock pump out the last 30 mins now with no success.

I've just found this writeup here on A4mods.

I have everything off except I cannont get the pump out of the basket. Anyone know any easy way to get this out?

I've tried tapping it with a flat head like I did with the securing ring but that didnt work.

Also in the writeup it shows 2 lines one for supply and one for return. Mine doesnt have this. I only have one fuel line going/coming from mine.

What is under the plate on the driver side? I took the cover off and it looks like a second pump? It could be and probably is the return just want to clarify it...

i changed my fuel pump a week ago and it wasnt fun. best way to get out the pump is to take a flat head place it in between a tab on top and bang it with a rubber mallet. remember to hit it Counter clock wise. Driver side is not another pump its the sender which has the level of how much gas is in the car.

Dont' think the driver side is the sender man. It has another fuel line going/coming from the top of it. I'm guessing its my return seen as there is only one line on the passenger side.

i can see the float in the passenger side one along with the pump.

Ill give it another shot with the flat head and mallet. Im afraid of damaging the basket though...

Edit: BTW James did you notice more whining from your pump since you upgraded to 71r?

You have to take something (big flathead) like you were doing and give it a pretty good wack to turn it to the left (counter clockwise). You will need to hit it pretty swiftly and it will turn a hair to the left and then lift out. Then when putting it back in it can be a pain because you have to line up the notches in the right spot before pushing it down and turning it back to the right to lock it in place. From the pump there will only be one hose that goes up to the white plastic cap that seals off the tank. There are two lines that plug in to the top of the cap but one is just venting back in and there is a really small hose sticking down in to the tank from the bottom of the cap where that 2nd line connects to the top. As far as the driver side, that is where the fuel is returned to the tank and then there is a float over there that works a pump to move fuel around the tank. It isn't like the fuel pump you are replacing though. The fuel sender for your gauge is right down in there with the pump you are replacing. Whoever labled that picture that A4mods is using was wrong, that 2nd line isn't the fuel return.

Went at it again on Friday evening. Good blunt smack of a hammer and flat head and it dis-lodged.

    Happy days, thanks guys.

James what I meant was did you change yours because of whining or did you just change it for piece of mind?

Mines nice and silent in the car but outside if you stand beside the rear passenger door you can here it pumping away, is this normal?

Mine was in there really tight and it seemed like i was going to break the basket by hitting it, so i (actually it was my dads idea) figured out a better way. Get a pair of channel locks, spread the handles, and put them on opposite sides of the inside of the fuel pump. Then just twist.

When putting it back in the writeup didnt say that it should be really easy to put the new pump in so i messed with it for a while while thinking i had it lined up correctly and trying to force it down in the basket, only to find out that i had it in there wrong. THE PUMP CAN ONLY GO IN ONE WAY! If it doesnt fall right in twist it around until it does. The tabs that have to line up are not evenly spaced on the pump.

I wanted to add this info to the writeup after i did my pump, but its a locked thread...

    Good point as well.

I had that problem too. For a moment I nearly though the new pump was actually a bit bigger in diameter. But I soon noticed like you said the tabs are not evenly spaced and it can only go in one way.
