    Silent Turn Signal Help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My turn signal "clicking" in the cabin randomly goes silent but the signal outside the car is working fine. Has anyone had this issue? I'm assuming yes and the answer is deep in the search section but I'll be honest I got tired of looking.

Who else out there is in the same boat or knows the issue.

    Cheers!

    Um...fail?

I think, if you read, he is wanting the sound. His car doesn't click and he wants to be able to hear the clicks...

OP, I honestly have no idea what might cause this. GL.

Not sure if the B7 is like the B5 in this sense because I just got my B7.

In the B5 there was a turn signal relay that actually sat behind the hazard button, and I believe that's where your "clicking" comes from. My guess would be a faulty turn signal relay, even though it's strange you say they still blink when it doesn't "click"

That would be the first part I'd replace if it was my car. If its under warranty, obviously I would have the dealer check that/replace it if possible. That's the only thing I could think of

the gong in the cluster is probably bad, do you get the chime for the headlights on or the door ajar, if not you need a new instrument cluster

I dont think its a chime sound, there is something in there physically making the clicking sound; its the same sound in every car..

Anyone find a fix for this?? Mine just started doing it as of 2 days ago. The turn signals blink on the outside and in the dash, but the "clicking" noise you always hear coming from the dash isn't always there. To me it sounds like a relay of some sort, but I searched and couldn't find anything on genuineaudiparts.com... Hoping it isn't something in the steering column...

Sounds like a faulty relay switch...which I believe is in the base of the turn signal arm, in the steering column.

On the EMkayFours the turn signal relay is shared in the hazard button, like someone else mentioned for B5s (probably identical now that i think of it) worth a shot.

I know when my Golf was in for some recall stuff they swapped that hazard switch and my turn click sounds "changed" a bit.

Wouldn't a bad relay make the turn-signals work errratically, if not at all?

True, I was suggesting the actual moving switch that makes the clicking noise.

Yea it's weird. They haven't stopped working as of yet, but the noises it makes definitely sounds like a relay. I kind of had a similar problem in my 02 cavalier once, only there my turn signals didn't work and then they would work-**->turned out to be a faulty relay. Who knew this would be so tricky to track down?!?!? I have downloaded a copy of Elsawin so hopefully I can find something with it. I will post back the fix once I find it.

    Update:

So I replaced the turn signal stalk on the column with a new one and I'm still having the issue. Not a big deal since the turn signals still work, just the " click, click, click, click" that goes with it is random or not at all. Anyone know where that clicking could or should be coming from?? Just really annoying to not be able to find it lol

Have you checked your 'Hazard' light switch? I'm not sure if that's the relay as the older models seems to trouble with that part. Push it and see if it clicks when flashing, if not, maybe that could be it.

Thanks for your help 80sGuy, but I have just pinpointed where the sound is coming from on the B7 models. The turn signal clicking noise actually comes from the instrument cluster and I have found the fix for myself and possibly some others as well. If anyone has any questions just ask them here that way we can have a thread that completely answers and fixes the problem. It seems that a connection that runs into the back of instrument cluster can become loose over time. The connection I have found seems to carry the signal to alert that the turn signals are in operation. When this connection becomes loose you may intermittently or permanently (depending on how loose the connection is) lose the turn signal "clicking" noise we're all accustomed to hearing. I just ran a ziptie around the bottom of the connection and tightened it down to a part of the dash, this holds the connection securely in place and allows the turn signal to function properly. You can see it by simply popping off the fuse panel door, but to actually get to it you must remove the bottom piece of trim under the steering wheel. Please see the video below to see the connection I am referring to.

Awesome job, glad you've tracked the sucker down. Yeah zip-tie it and that should be a permanent fix for good!

Nope the turn signal is controlled by the ECU not a relay.

A-Black_MambA-4, nice job finding the issue :)

^^I guess most electrical behaviors on newer cars are controlled by its computers these days. I remembered having problems with my turn-signal on an older Porsche and $30 Relay fixed it.

Hello, any guess where to check first if I have silent turn signal on A4 B8 Avant `10? One morning the sound was gone. Just like that.

Edit: ignore, will move to B8 tech page...
