DIY Halogen to Bixenon- Conversion Complete.

Thanks to: NPuter, Cabal San, Tartan, Macuser, and anyone else who has contributed. You guys rock

Big thanks to Kylan, Sin_City_Rings for hooking me up with his old bi-xenon housings after he got e-codes (from Jens also). Thanks for the great price Kylan

BIGGGG THANKS TO JENS aka LowestA4 (i think). Dood got me everything I needed other than the housings for a GREAT PRICE. Lets just say he got me everything (2x LED ballast, 2x HID ballast, Kufatec Adapter, Bulbs, Screws) for just more than the price of ONE HID BALLAST ($600) would have been from Audi Dealership. Audi wanted 600/each hid ballast, $300/each led ballast, etc....so Jens saved me ALOT of money. Thank you so much Jens!!!

    so happy now .

One Problem: No high-beams. Have to track that down and they will be 100%. I'll live without highbeams for the time being. I think this might have something to do with the extra wires from kufatec no? I had an Audi tech install those two wires into the harnesses for me, so if thats the case i might ask him to take a second look.

    Teaser Pic

    What's Needed

OEM Bi-Xenon Headlights, US or Euro spec. (including bulbs and ballasts obviously)

    Kufatec Adapter

    VAGCOM

    That should be it.

The first step I did was run the extra wires that run off of the kufatec adapters through the firewall. (pics thanks to macuser)

    1. take this thing off

    2. unscrew this

    3. lift this thing up

Under the rain tray on the drivers-side if you look down you will see two little bolts holding the wiperfluid holder on...unscrew those so you can kind of move the holder out of the way. Look down and you will see a black rubber plug of sorts (round and like 3" big). Remember that plug.

Now it's time to take the lower dash panel off...

There are two small bolts/screws to take off underneath, those should be pretty obvious. The hidden one is underneath the fuse panel. You pop off the fuse panel, which is on the drivers side of the dash when you open the door. You will see the 3rd bolt. Take that out and the dash should slide off. You will have to unclip the little harness for the led and remove the plug for the vagcom port.

Once the dash is removed, you will be able to look down there and see a black plug about 3" in diameter right up and above where your left foot would be if you were sitting in the seat. That is the same hole you can see from under the raintray.

This part is kind of tricky. I didn't know the best way to deal with the firewall. I first gently stuck a screwdriver through the plug on the drivers side. I then took that out and put some needle-nose pliers in place. My brother held those open while i dangled down the kufatec wires. One they were safely in the needle-nose pliers, we gently pulled the pliers (which were holding the wires) through. I pulled the wire through a little for some slack.

Once i had the adapter wire through the firewall, it was time to pin them into the connector. I broke two clips doing this and had to go to audi for replacements, which were NOT cheap.

You need to remove these two connectors from up under the dash

I had an audi-tech wire them for me since i broke the clips the first time. I believe the magenta colored part of each clip needs to be moved out of the way in order to get the pins in. I'm sorry but I cant help with this. Anyway, the wires need to be pinned into slot #3 on the tan and slot #9 on the red. My wires were marked pin 3 and pin 9.

After that, go ahead and pull any slack from the wire back through the firewall and towards the engine.

Put the dash back together now if you want.

Now its time to take the headlights out. I used this link as a guide:

    http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=2772160

This is what it looks like with the light removed:

if you look closely you can see the two screws that need to be loosened below/behind the light (not to be confused with the two on top of the headlight)

Get the Kufatec adapter and plug one side (you'll be able to tell which side is which) into the halogens wiring harness.

Make sure to plug in the headlight and TEST it before tightening anything. We did it before we even slid them into place. You could even do it before taking the halogen out (just unplug the harness)

once the lights have been tested, unplug if necessary and make sure the adapter is routed where you want. Once it is, plug the other side of the kufatec adapter into the light. Line up the new bi-xenon headlight and carefully slide it into place. You have to put them back in just like you took them out, kind of at an angle. There is a little track that they slide into, which guides the tabs into place. Then tighten the bolts back down once the tabs are in place. One thing we had to do with my lights were transfer the upper clips from the halogen headlights over to the bi-xenon headlights. Make sure the new headlights have the upper tabs. They screw in and out very easily and it was no problem to transfer them.

Once the lights are both in, use zip ties to secure the kufatec harness wires to points of your choice. We ran the harness across the front of the engine bay, careful to watch out for the hood latch. There is a cable that runs along that we zipped tied it to..

Once everything is secure it is time to use the VAG-COM...

    i believe you go to:

    [09 - Cent. Elect.]
    [Coding - 07]

We went to the actual long code and I used this code provided by macuser:

    New: 26001031063C00010000080000001D0D0F1452080000000100 0000

It works perfectly for me, except i need to figure out how to get my highbeams to work. I used 1D0D and am going to try 5D5D and see if that changes anything and enables my highbeams. OTher than having no highbeams, everything is great. The LED DRL's have been set to full brightness and stay on when the turn signal is on. They look awesome.

    Coding for Bi-Xenon Retrofit

After completing the retrofit, it is essential that you change the coding listed below.
Without the coding, the xenon bulbs will turn on with a red flash. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure that is not good for the bulbs. They will flicker/turn off. In addition, the LEDs will not work.
Basically, the coding is essential - do not think you can avoid changing the coding. Make sure you have access to a VAG-Com at the time of the retrofit or you will be left with non-functioning lights!

    [09 – Cent. Elect.]
    [Coding - 07] -> Long Coding Helper

Byte 0: From 69 → 26 = change from halogen to xenon bulbs
    Byte 2: From 00 → 10 = enable LED DRL
    Byte 14: From 7F → 1D = bi-xenon high-beams
    Byte 15: From 5F → 0D = bi-xenon high-beams

Hey, let me know if you get your high beams to work. I'm still puzzled by that. I can't high beam any slow drivers :( ....

What are all these VAG code things on the car? How do they work and what does this all basically mean? Just trying to figure out this stuff now before i get my car. Also are there any output pics of the highbeams of the projectors?

no man, the pics you saw above (assuming they're on pg. 10) are of a full conversion. you can't just throw LEDS in to the halogen housing, for many reasons. inaccessibility being one.

you're gonna have to spend the ~1K to do it right, or buy an LED strip from eBay and just glue them to your fog grills and have some pretend ones.

x2 ^, there is no easy way to do this and by the time you are done it won't look half as good as the real thing and you would have spent time/labor on it.
There are bargains on used sets everywhere. You should just get the real deal and you'll be much happier with the end result.

Just used that coding to fix flickering right low beam on a converted B8 from halogen and it worked perfectly. The previous shop had messed up all the coding, but now it's awesome, thanks a bunch!

Re: Halogen to Bixenon- Conversion Complete.

Yeah, try the coding swap to the old 5D5D and see. *Or 3D0D. Talking w Ross Tech, it wont hurt to put in diff values in regards to other coding, so try diff combinations for byte 14/15.

Question: did you route the right light trigger wire to the back of the engine bay and then over, or in the front?

They actually both came out of the harness on the left (driver) side....so they were right there and i will post pics of how I ran it later tonight or tomorrow!

We really need to figure out how to get the high beams to work... Without the ability to get the high beams working, it is pointless to run the extra adapter wires - which is the most difficult part of the install...

So that Kufatec is only used to get high beams? If we dont purchase it, everything still works- but without high beams, correct?

no - the kufatec adapter is still needed because some of the pins are swapped between halogen and xenon which the adapter takes care of - the kufatec adapter also has two extra wires that need to be run into the car for the high-beams specifically

    -------

Ok. I just thought of something - according to the instructions (that were written when 2009 cars were around), you need to change 14 and 15 from 5F5F to 5D5D - well the coding that Cabal_san posted shows P- 14/15 as 7F5F
Now on the coding for P+, it shows 14/15 as 3D0D...

    5+2 = 7(F5F) of P-
    1+2 = 3(D0D) of P+

Basically what I am saying is - lets try 3D0D for Byte 14 and 15

To be sure though - can someone please post the coding of 09-cent elec from a stock 2010 P+ that you got from your US spec car?

macuser - your high beams are working correct?

So how much does this upgrade cost? Just curious on the costs of upgrading after purchasing the car, than just buying it straight out the dealer.

It looks so much better now

Thanks. With the deals I've gotten, I only paid like $875 (including kufatec adapters)

The dealer wanted $300/each led ballast, $600/each hid ballast, etc...so that would be thousands if purchased from dealer (once you priced housings, bulbs, screws also)....the p+ and up were like 3-4k+ more i believe...so i think i got a pretty good deal with the swap.

    hey Cabal_san...
I'm going to Novitech Tuning on Friday to have them install my xenons - I will let you know how it goes.

I am hoping to get the highbeams working... I am going to try 1D0D for 14/15, if that's a no-go, then I will try 5D5D and 3D0D...
If that doesn't work, I don't know what will...

I'm kinda shocked that more people on here with a 2010 P+ haven't been gracious enough to post their mod 09 long coding values. I mean with windows cut n paste, it's not like its hard or something.

    Well I wish you luck!

Re: Halogen to Bixenon- Conversion Complete.

Anyone involved in this thread have heated seats? I noticed mine arent working. I'm starting to wonder if maybe the audi tech put the harnesses back in the wrong slots since that would be very easy to do. If not, i need to figure out my coding issue. I used macusers whole code...im assuming you dont have heated seats or do you? I am stupid for rushing and not writing my initial code down, whooops.

the RossTech software keeps a log of all coding changes you make... It is located: C:/Ross-Tech/VCDS/Debug/CodingLog.TXT
There is also an adaption one too...

Just to be extra safe though, I have a text file where I write down what the change I am making will do, the original coding, what bytes are changed, and the new coding...

    OFF TOPIC---------
Anyone watch 24? Last monday's episode had Jack driving an S6 - It was pretty cool how they detailed the car....

My lights arrived today, with no apparent damage. I feel very lucky. Now i have to wait for Kufatec to ship the harness's. they are still on back order. Also the lights came with two extra brackets in an L shape. I don't have time to take a photo, but if anyone can tell me what they might be I would appreciate it. I'll send a pic tonight to help out.

It wound up being a little over a grand and took two weeks for delivery. But it took him three weeks to actually ship them so it took a month and a half to really get here. I got news yesterday from Kufatec that the harness came in but they did not have enough
to fill all the orders. Mine being one of them. You don't want to sell me yours do you? LOL.
