    FSI Carbon Buildup

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Does anyone know if the R8 4.2 and/or the 5.2 FSI engines suffer from the same problems of carbon buildup as the 4.2 RS4s as reference in this thread http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=334489. I know the oiling systems are completely different because of the dry sump but since this is caused by the PCV letting vaporized oil into the inlet combined with no air/gas mixture cleaning off the back of the valves, I am forced to wonder. Anyone know if anyone has experienced this problem on an R8? Mine is a daily driver and the miles are stacking up quick. It would suck if I needed to keep getting the heads cleaned to keep performance up.

    Re: FSI Carbon Buildup

My service rep told me that carbon build up will likely be an issue for the R8 as well. How many miles do you have on your car so far, Meradin?

2 months and 4,500 miles? Wow, that's a lot of driving. But I guess that's one of the great things about the R8, is that you really can use it as a daily driver.

If I find out more about the carbon build-up issue on this motor, I'll be happy to share the info with you.

    Re: FSI Carbon Buildup

I believe this is an issue with all FSI motors including the R8V10.
I have not talked to any R8 owners that have had to deal with this. However someone did post that there was an R8 at a dealer getting cleaned up.

Scotty- I would love to see an R8 among all your other exotic car photos. Highly recommended!

    Re: FSI Carbon Buildup

It's a issue with all of the FSI motors, including the 2.0T, 4.2, and 5.2. Without fuel being sprayed before the valves, carbon buildup has no problem forming on the intake valves at an alarming rate.

I have ~7200 miles on my '09 R8 V8. I do not know of any issues with carbon building up. I have not heard of any issues. R8talk.com would be the place to ask the question. There are people with over 20,000 miles on their car.

I asked my sales rep about getting a catch can to deal with this issue for both my 2009 R8 and 2010 S4. He said that Audi warrants the engine, and if there's buildup they will fix it under warranty.

He also suggested that spirited driving is better than babying the car.

Not sure if that's a solution to carbon buildup or not.

You can fix the problem by giving the correct .com address instead of .net.

Read the 2007-2008 RS4 owners problem in getting his carbon buildup addressed - he had to pay $3000 of his own money to pay an independent shop (not covered by warranty) to physically dremel all the caked on soot off. Many pictures in those recent threads.

Update: Evolution MotorSports is performing a twin turbo install and engine build on a R8 V8. They are also reporting excessive carbon buildup.

lol! Surely you jest!!!! The sales rep told u they would take care of it? Ya, read about all the rs4 owner troubles in the s4/rs4 forum... R8s might be slower with buildup because of the dry sump but they are still having the same problem.

it seems to be the nature of the beast with direct injection. the R8s will experience the same phenomenon. period.

The redesigned 2015 and up R8 added port injection to the direct engine. Does anyone who owns a 2015 R8 V10 know if, when serviced, their intake vales did not suffer from the infamous carbon buildup that was present on the direct injection only R8 V8s and V10s? Thanks if you know.
