    Thumbs up

If anyone is looking for a cheaper place to find an LAD5GL... I have found this website. http://hidconcept.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=39
However, I have yet to order from them, so I won't vouch for it. That being said, I'm aware of what is needed to be done as far as wiring goes when swapping from the LAD5G to the LAD5GL, but I am curious of the models are the same dimensions? When I called Mopar, they said the LAD5G (68019173AA) is 6" long, which sounds about right, but the LAD5GL (5139061AA) is 9" long. That being said, it would seem like they don't fit. Can someone that has actually done the swap confirm that they are are same dimensions? I don't mind swapping connectors, but I would like everything to go back together and work like factory.

So after doing a bit too much reading up on this issue for the past 2 days, Ive come to the conclusion that my ballast is bad as well. I have an 02 A4 and I swapped out the bulb, that didnt work, tried it in the working side, that worked. How hard is swapping out the balast?
Also, when I went to purchase new bulbs, every site said that the 02 A4 took the D1S bulb but upon removal of mine, the bulb clearly says on it D2S... thoughts on this? Is this correct?

Very early VIN number '02 A4s have D2S HID bulbs, all later VIN '02s> have D1S, so your A4 with D2S bulbs is correct for your early VIN number. The ballast is located on the bottom of the headlight, remove 6 screws after unpluging the input and output connectors inside the housing. Specific to your early VIN D2S setup, the ballast and ignitor/lamp connector are joined together and must be replaced together. These early 4G type ballasts are very hard to find, so updating the parts with the current 5GL thin ballasts is the way to go. You can update to a newer "Thin" LAD 5GL" type ballast, but you will need the same connector cable used with the ballast>D1S later type xenon headlight, and the Valeo twist-on ignitor that has the D2S connector built in. The ballast>HID lamp cable fits both the D2S twist-on ignior with connector for the bulb, and the D1S integrated ignitor lamp module. These parts are available from specialty vendors on eBay. PM me for additonal assistance if needed.

Also, I just came across a pair of headlights (HIDs and complete assembly) for a 2003 A4. Is that something I can swap in place of my current headlights or are the connections different as you mentioned before? The guy is willing to part with the pair for $200 so Im highly considering it if its possible to do so.

Edit: can someone link the way to a 4 port plug that will work for this conversion to a GL? I called LLtek and they are out and will never get the adapter from 12 to 4 anymore. Valero doesn't make it any more according to them.

Update: I Installed my Ballasts last night. I had G and the new ones were GL. I took a hack saw to the 12 port plug and cut it into a 4 port. Its easy and a clean way to do it. Just make sure you cut the correct side of the 12 port so that the port and the plug line up with each other because they are indexed.

Anyone have any resources on going from the 12 wire to the four of the LAD5G to LAD5GL other than hacking it? Thanks.

You can order the 4 terminal plugs for the LAD5GL ballast, without wires. Then carefully extract the red and brown wires from the 12 terminal housing and insert into the 4 terminal housing. If the 4 terminal plugs come with a red and brown pigtail wires, just extract the pigtails and insert the wire terminals from the 12 terminal plug directly, no need to splice the pigtails. Make sure the curved spring contact that bends against the pins, is not to loose, if needed gently add some curve to the spring contact of the terminal for good contact with the ballast pins.

I read you can get your 12 pin ballasts rebuilt/refurbished by this guy Phil (fly300kts). Is there a reason no one is talking about this as a viable solution?

for what its worth, just picked up a set of bi xenon housings, restored the lenses, and bought the ballasts and bulbs from HID concept. I know it would have been less if I pieced them together, but $400 shipped for 2 ballasts, 2 bulbs, 2 cables and 12 screws wasn't bad at all, considering I got them all together, and in only two days.

anyway, thank god for this thread.

and for anyone who is contemplating going from halogen to xenon/bi-xenon, don't hesitate. Its the best $650 I've ever put into my car.

Guys, help me out. Did the conversion successful only a FEW days ago only to find dipped beam out again today. Pull it out once home, and about a pint of water pours out the back. I know some dough is about to go, IE: new housings, and ballast.

    but

In a desperate last thought in which not to spend thousands, could a reverse halogen housing swap work? That's how fed up I am.

It's the 4 pin connector. I just did the swap on one of my Ballasts recently. My 03' actually has the early ballasts orginally. Follow the swap instructions and simply cut your 12 pin connector down to 4 pins and plug it in!

I'm confused with power input connector. In another thread, they are talking about, 5GL has 6pin power connector. In this thread they are talking about 4pin power input connector on 5GL ballast.

    thread: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...using-question

I have early D2S using 4G ballast (6pin connector). Do i need to replace power plug connector if i buy 5GL . Question mark for 4G on the picture was not answered or is the description on the picture wrong. Very confusing, please clarify

Hmm. Not sure. I don't think many of us have seen a D2S bulb in a B6 chassis. If it's a 4-pin connector then you might be OK, but I'm not familiar with the 4G ballast. You might have to post a picture of the connector to get an opinion here. Or simply go have a look and compare yours to the 5GL ballast pics in this thread.

I'm searching for 4pin power adapter, ETKA says (8E0 971 671) probably direct fit to connect to a 12pin plug harness, other end has 4pin that goes to 5GL ballast). Probably power input adapter to transfer from 5G to 5GL. Can't verify, but clearly is power input adapter for 5GL.

    picture of 4G ballast:

this is the specification of headlight:

Checking at ETKA it's like this:

    - 2B (5G ballast), 2C (5GL ballast), 2 (4G ballast)
    - harness from ballast to bulbs is the same for 5G and 5GL (2A - 3D0 971 671 A).
    - harness for power input to ballast 5GL (2E - 8E0 971 671), for 2D ETKA doesn't give you any results
    - 4G ballast, give's result (repair kit), it can be done with 5GL but headlight has 6pin power plug, original you need D2S Igniter bulb holder. But you can swap to D1S

2B (5G) and 2C (5GL) gives the same part number= part number for 5GL ballast. If i understand correctly the whole thing:
--- If you have 4G ballast, buy repair kit (costs around 500€),
    --- if you have 5G ballast, buy 5GL ballast and power input harness 2E - 8E0 971 671.

So I'm crossing my fingers that my right headlight out is just the bulb, but otherwise I can't find a cheap replacement ballast like you guys did in the past. I will do some more looking, but maybe they caught on to what we where doing.

My ballasts just burned on my B6 S4. I am looking to order from EuropaParts since they are the cheapest ones out there compared to the molar websites now.
Did you try them on your headlight? Any issues?
