so i went to go change the passenger egt sensor and i give up. I followed the diy and used a 17mm wrench but it would fit. So i went to pep boys and picked up a 18mm too big, also i cant get it to firmly grip the sensor to wrench it out. So i just cut the sensor and give up...

my question is how long can i drive around with 1 cut egt sensor thats bad...

Wow...never heard of taking that extreme measure...You risk damage to cats, plugs O2 sensors when running around like that. If you alread cut the old sensor, just stick a 17mm socket over the retaining nut and get it out that way.

Likely the rust as made your nut expand. I'd tap a socket over it (now that it's cut) and try again.

    Re: EGT sensor

+1 i would LOVE to use a socket lol but the problem is actually i ripped the wires from the metal housing so the sensor is still in there and there is a metal part of the wire sticking out. How do i cut that?

also the sensor seems to be in there good, im having a hard time getting it out!!! what about putting the new sensor in? does it have to be tight?

Just cut the remaining stuff off with snips, pliers, whatever. It's already jacked up now. Clean the threads on the bung before you put the new one in.

PB blaster. PB Blaster. PB Blaster. I love that shit, spray a couple times, let it sit till tomorrow, and it will eat up the rust.

Side note just got 2 new EGT's from JHM. Woot.

    Re: EGT sensor

Haha, i just did my passenger side this evening, i know what you are talking about where you couldn't get a 17mm to fit. You kind of have to be at the right angle for it fit right. But i found if i flipped the wrench i could get a better fit on the nut. and Once you break the nut loose you should be able to twist it off the rest of the way with your hand. And when you put the new sensor on Don't torque the sh*t out of it, just make it snug. Wait till you have to do the Driver's side.., That's where i'm getting stuck at. Can't get to the damn thing. Thinking about taking it to my mechanic and having him do the swap and hoping for dear life that the sensors is what fixes my problem!

    Hope this helps!

^ Been there... I actually decided to start the swap instead of doing my projects for school. I have no patience to sit down and do homework and projects.

Take your time on Friday and make sure you have all the right tools you need! I found this out the hard way...

Hope you get it all worked out, i'm trying to get my driver's side down by Saturday so i can cruise to a show with some lambo's! Don't feel like being in limp mode while driving with those guys! haha.

Are you sure you're EGT's are bad? Why are you replacing them? Or are you just doing it as a preventative thing?

    Re: EGT sensor

no i get a code for a bad egt sensor it was

    1 Fault Found:
17862 - Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 1 (G235): Short to Ground
    P1454 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

well anyways after 1/2 can of pb blaster i finally finished that PITA sensor. In the process though i broke my coolant temp sensor clip (the latch that locks it onto the cts) so i put it back on and it seems to be ok. You think it will come off?

... well, can your glue it or get to a junk yard? The sensor is universal across all b5 a4 s4 and b6 a4 so you have plenty of cars to pull the harness end from.

Take an old 17mm wrench open ended and cut it in half or shorter and your all set. Projects become much easier.

    Re: EGT sensor

Or just buy a short 17mm wrench, move all the hoses and heat shield out of the way, and you should be able to get to it.

yours must've not been too tightened. I got my driver's side lose from the top and had to unscrew it from the bottom. Had to go Mcgyver on that shit

    Re: EGT sensor

driver side was difficult to thread back in. I did break both of them loose with the motor out then re tightened them, that probably made it alot easier. I also dont have any heat sheilding or junk down there.

Used antiseize on both new ones.

+1, PB Blaster has always done its magic for me, make sure you're in a well ventilated area though. It works like WD40 on steroids and smells like it too

I haven't done any yet. I was looking for some preventative maintenance things I could do easily. I was reading up on it awhile back and I wasnt sure if it would be harder to get at with the bigger transmission compared to the 6 speed.

That's not really a preventative maintenance thing and not something I would want to replace just to be doing something. They are expensive. Change them when they fail.
