    Hard Cold Starts 2.0T

It's a bone stock 2006 A4 2.0T with 45k on it... when I go to start my car after it's been sitting a while, it takes a while on the starter before it fires up. Maybe 5 to 8 seconds. I know that's not terribly long, but it's got me kind of concerned as it didn't used to be that way. I don't get a gas smell, and there is no puff of black or white smoke when it fires up. Once running, it's perfectly fine. Any suggestions?

Mine is doing the same. Only when it's cold out. Since the coil packs are on recall, I figure it could be that and I will be changing my spark plugs soon. I'm at 56k miles. Hell, sometimes I have to turn it off and crank it three times. ANd yes, I do wait till the fuel is primed before cranking, just to make sure it isn't a fuel shortage.

Yeah check the plugs for the proper gap. The priming occurs at the time you open the door so it should be primed completely by the time you get into the car and turn the key.

I have a 2006 and I do not have this issue but my dad also have 2006 and had this issue. The dealer changed the PCV valve I beleive and it fixed the problem.

Mine primes when the key is turned to on (not start), I always wait for the pump to stop before starting and usually watch the awe gauge cycle all the way up and then back down.

Hey man, I also had some hard starts. It wasn't not turning over but when I started it the engine would give the whole car a few hard shudders. Long story short I got the Crankcase Breather Valve replaced under warranty at 25k miles. I'll re-type exactly what the tech said on the invoice:

Customer states that when starting the vehicle there are a few hard shakes on initial start-up. Check and advise. Found engine very shaky at start-up and when driving. Checked faults, none stored in ECU. Checked MVB 32, found system lean condition. Upon turning off vehicle heard a loud whistling from crankcase breather, also noted that TSB 2015505 does not apply to this MY.
Replaced breather due to it leaking internally.

Here is the part number that they replaced: 06F-129-101-E

    Cheers,
    -Chris

    Re: Hard Cold Starts 2.0T

There is a little motor on the back of the engine called the IRMC or IMRC. Intake Manifold Motor Control or something. It can cause cold start problems and slight misfiring under heavy throttle.
There is a TSB from Audi for it. Should be under warranty.
    Good luck.

    Re: Hard Cold Starts 2.0T

subscribing.. I have the same issue.. plugs have been changed, using good gas, wait for FP to prime, only thing left is the coilpack recall. However, I asked the dealer and they said if I have a coilpack problem, it would be noticeable like running on 3 cylinders rather than 4. I dont know how much stock to put in that but I do occasionally have rough idle when at stop lights and it seems to stumble along with the long/hard starts in cold.

    Re: Hard Cold Starts 2.0T

Dealer replaced my Crankcase breather valve and updated the ecm firmware, but i still get the cold start issue if haven't driven the car in a few days. A friend also had the same issue, except his car (05.5 2.0T) wouldn't start at all. The dealer replaced his coilpacks, and a few days later he parked, went into a bar, and his engine somehow caught fire.
AOA obviously bought the car back from him and he ended up buying an E46 M3.

    Re: Hard Cold Starts 2.0T

I have the same issue and the same year, 06 2.0T.

I took it to the dealer and they flashed the new software for my A4 and said it shouldn't do it again. However, its still happening. I'm going to change my sparkplugs now. I think they're starting to go.

Any more info on this? Just noticed my '06 2.0T is having this same issue when it's been sitting for a while, doesn't like to start up with the first crank or two. Was planning on replacing spark plugs soon so I'll do that, but wondering more about the IMRC. Any link to the particular TSB? Having a hard time finding it when searching.

Bump. Replaced the spark plugs and that didn't help at all.

Car cranked a while when I went to start it up to drive to work this morning (after not being driven for 2 days). I just kept the key turned until it started up but it was with a lot of hesitation. Problem seems to steadily be getting worse (cold starts). If the car has been driven in the past day it starts up just fine, usually.

    Thoughts?

Start by calling your local reputable audi dealer with your VIN number and ask them for a list of campaigns on your car. My 06 had coilpacks, IMRC, PCV, and Fuel Sensor all replaced for free by the dealer. Campaign codes 28F2, 24T3, 17D9, and 24T4 respectively. Campaigns require that the dealer replace the parts without any engine codes unlike a TSB. I believe the 4 campaigns i mentioned were valid on my car until 100,000 miles so hopefully you're below that. Start by addressing these and replace your fuel filter as well.

Thank you! I'll start with this... Unfortunately I'm at the 124K mark... haha - we'll see what they say!
