    Welcome to The Fabrication Forum

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Welcome to the fabrication forum. This is a forum designed to help the all members to design, source, and make anything for your Audi. We will be working on compiling as much information as possible to give users the ability to properly complete any task. Fabrication is without a doubt the most fun thing to do with your car (aside from driving). I feel there is no better reward than seeing an idea of your come to life, or looking at something you designed on your car.

Fabrication is much more then welding or machining. It all starts as an idea. We will do everything possible to properly show users how to start from an idea, doing the necessary calculations, go to a 2D drawing, then sourcing your materials, and utilizing the right people and equipment to see your idea come to life. In addition to Clint and myself, we will be introducing George to the AZ community. George is a Mechanical Engineer with 2 degrees from John Hopkins University. Since joining the team here he has become a proficient welder, machinist, tuner and fabricator. We felt it was important to train him on all these processes so he can do his job better. He is an avid car enthusiast and is a huge bimmer guy. He will be helping with the engineering portion of your projects whenever you need him as well as myself. If there is one thing that has been proven in the field of fabrication, it is anything is possible.

So please have fun with this forum guys, its going to be a great place to show off your abilities and projects as well as get some insight on how to do some tough tasks. We will work on several papers that will be targeted to novices, and teaching them the complex intricacies of fabrication. Things from material science to measurement techniques, and different processes available to complete a project. Many fabrication projects will require tools that the common DIY’er will not have. We will try to work with you to put your design into a universal format that will allow you to properly outsource your design to a fabrication shop or machinist to get a completed unit. Also this will be a great venue to just come up with the wildest ideas and get into some heated engineering debates. Remember there is no such thing as a bad idea, you are just finding ways not to do it! As capable and experienced as we are here at RAI, rarely does the original plan resemble the finished product. Redesigning is the essence of fabrication.

i am hoping we will be able to teach you guys how to make a proper 2d drawing. if you can complete this it is easy for the machinist of even us to program the cnc. The most expensive cost is for the set up and programming. Bringing a jump drive with the program already written will make this much cheaper.

As in CNC gear? I mainly run a HAAS VF2-SS but have access to a few other machines also.

    o rly?

common wear item in the B8's is the start/stop button, the aluminum peels off the plastic underneath... over on A5OC we were discussing possibly fabbing in solid aluminum.

do-able? waste of time? too expensive to be worth while?

best way to judge this it to take it apart and look at it. If its a simple cylinder then it will be very easy to make, just a little time on a lathe. You can probably even mill it out because its very small.

get it apart and post up pics then we can work on the 2 d drawing.

haha, i would but it's nothing original. just basically copying drawings from the pro/e textbook we have, but i will try to find pics of my senior design project that we completed last year. we built a welding table and fume extraction system. one kid drew it all up in solidworks- i'll look for it.

    my school's machine shop includes:
    2 manual lathes
1 CNC lathes (HAAS, not sure of model)
    2 manual mills
    1 CNC mill (HAAS)
    Welding station we built
then the woodshop with saws and grinders up the yinyang with a custom dust extraction unit some students built a few years ago.

Would like to inquire about some engine bay parts possibly being made, how does one get in touch with u to further inquire?
Since u are based out of CA FYI I'm in NY so I hope that won't be a problem.

Came across you guys on the fabrication end of the Audizine forums, I thinking about doing a wire tuck and a shaved engine bay on my 2001 A6 4.2q. I live in NY but frequent MD and would like to run this by you and see what it requires. That being said my engine harness needs to be replaced shops are telling me that the engine has to b possibly lifted at the lowest point being the oil lvl. sensor. So I was considering a wire tuck@ tht point. I know its labor intensive but I bought the car with 116k and no problems other than harness looking chewed. The car does run by the way. My Audi guy say he can do the harness and tuck the wires and even prep the bay 4 the shave but they don't do bodyworkat the shop at all. Ideally when u open the hood all I want to see is the engine no hoses harnesses if possible. Looking foward to hearing from u guys in regards to this build thank you for your time in advance.

Going to Fab a short runner intake for my MK4 12V VR6 I've seen people use 3" and 4" exhaust piping on some builds to avoid corrosion, and the set ups don't look bad. My only concern is fabricating the injector ports I have a ac225arc welder at my dispose but I'm wondering if I decide to go aluminum if I should borrow a mig or tig for the job.
